Sevilla are near the top of the table, back where their fans think they belong. This is a team with a pedigree in Europe and in La Liga so it is a team that should be near the top, but hasn’t always been. This could be their season though because they are in the Champions League and they are up there in the league as well.
Standing in their way is Atletico Bilbao. They will be ready to make life difficult for Sevilla and for all those international players who are returning from World Cup Qualification matches.
Bilbao have been poor so far this season, losing games they shouldn’t have lost, such as was the case when they were beaten by Zorya in Europe, and struggling to finish off teams in La Liga. They were within a goal of Valencia and Atletico Madrid and they have beaten Girona and Elber, but really those are games they are expected to win and unless they start picking up their play against bigger teams, including Sevilla, then they will struggle this season.
They are currently sitting in 13th, which is a very respectable league position on paper. But this early in the season it means nothing. They are just three points away from being in the relegation zone and if you were to take just two points away from their current total they would be second from bottom. That’s how tight things are down there at this point and it’s why they need to start getting more points.
They will not see this as a game that they can win, even with home advantage. However, they will see it as a game that they can get a draw from. They will look to park the bus and to play defensive throughout, hopefully walking away with a 0-0 result that they will treat as a job well done.
Sevilla are playing out of their socks at the beginning of this season. Not everything has gone their way, but they have been solid throughout. Even in the Champions League they have done well, getting a draw away to Liverpool and beating Maribor. The problem they have is that they have only been tested by one big team in La Liga and they lost that. They have also scraped through a few other games against lesser teams.
A win is a win, of course, but it doesn’t bode well and there is always a chance they will drop points against teams like Bilbao, especially when they are playing away from home and are up against it.
I think Bilbao will give Sevilla a hard time. They need something from this game simply because they will see their home games as their way to remain in this league. Sevilla will also struggle to break them down and to finish their chances, as they have done with many other teams this season. That should lead to a frustrating night for both of the teams and ultimately I think it will ensure that this one ends with the points being shared.
So, get your money on this one being a draw.
