None of the big teams are playing each other in this opening EPL weekend, but one former giant is up against a current giant and it should prove to be a big fixture both in terms of entertainment and importance.
Arsenal vs Leicester may potentially be one of the most exciting games of this opening Premier League weekend, but I think that this one will come pretty close as Newcastle look to make a winning start on their return to the Premier League.
So, strap in and prepare for a ride on Sunday afternoon.
There have been some huge changes in the Newcastle squad this season and the fans are very excited for the season ahead. I know that because I am one of those fans and while I have been let down with previous years in the top tier, this looks like it could finally be our year. We’re not going to win it or anything, but we should be able to cement our position in the league and maybe even challenge for a spot in the Europa League.
There are some worrying things going on in the squad, including losing promising players like Armstrong, Gibson, Anita, Sels, Thauvin and Mbabu. But as good as they were, they never quite fit into the squad and apart from Anita, they don’t really prove their worth. Also, they don’t come across as players that are currently capable of performing in the top tier and that’s crucial, because it’s what the Toon Army need right now.
They have signed many players who are more than capable as well. They include Atsu, who was on loan to them last season and did some amazing things. It also includes Manquillo, who was a steal. It’s going to be an exciting year and it surely won’t end in tears for the black and white faithful.
Tottenham have been one of the best teams in the Premier League for a few years now. For two years in a row they went close and just missed out. This season they will be hoping that they can go one better, but there is clearly a lot of competition out there and with hundreds of millions being spent, it’s only getter stronger.
Tottenham haven’t been as active in the Premier League transfer window. In fact, as of this first Premier League game, they have yet to sign a single player. Not only have they not yet brought anyone in, but they have waved goodbye to Kyle Walker, one of the best full-backs in the Premier League. His absence will be notable and they will need to bring someone in to replace him.
There are no massive losses elsewhere and you would expect them to bring some quality players in. They have the money for it and they will need it, so it only makes sense.
This is going to be tough and I’m tempted to sit on the fence. But I think we will have a winner and I think it will be Tottenham.
They are the away team and they are up against it with a Newcastle team that dominated in the second tier and have improved a lot since then.
But Spurs have the better squad, they are more experienced as a team and they have always done well against Newcastle anyway. They will be delighted to get off to a good start after drawing many of their opening games last season and this is a great chance for them to do it.
It’s hard to see them winning big here, but win they will and that will be all that they care about.
