AFG vs WI Match Prediction - Nov 09, 2019

West Indies won the first match against Afghanistan with ease. It is going side with plenty of new players that the West Indies has got on this tour and beginning with a Will was important for it. Afghanistan, on the other hand, would have been very disappointed with its effort. Not only did the batting fail to put up a defendable total, but the bowling was also completely ineffective.

The home side will need to work much harder to be able to make the kind of impact it is looking for in this series. This is a three-match series and so this next game becomes a must-win for Afghanistan.

Afghanistan vs West Indies 2nd ODI is going to be played at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee International Cricket Stadium, Lucknow on the 9th of November 2019.

AFG vs WI Team Previews

Afghanistan

We think that Afghanistan would like to forget its performance in the previous match and start ahead but the truth is that Afghanistan has been struggling in ODI cricket for quite some time now.

Surely it is time for Hazratullah Zazai to be given a break and not just continue to get games on the basis of ‘potential’. His inability to get any consistency in the game is hurting Afghanistan.

Javed Ahmadi also does not appear to be a natural opening batsman.

Rahmat Shah and Ikram Ali Khil are the two players that looked comfortable in the previous match. They recovered from the early wickets and scored fifties before Ikram Ali Khil was run out in comical fashion.

These two and Asghar Afghan are the batsmen that will have to score the bulk of the runs.

Afghanistan’s batting problems are not going away anytime soon and we think they should just aim to get a fighting total on the board rather than trying to get a winning one.

Rashid Khan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Mohammad Nabi were the main threat to the West Indian batting but they did not have any impact on the West Indian batting. A combination of the pitch and drew made them completely ineffective.

If these three cannot improve in the next match then Afghanistan has next to no chance of winning because its pacers are pedestrian at best.

West Indies

The West Indies team was barely stretched in the opening game as it ticked off all the boxes perfectly. The bowling was very tight and managed to pick up two quick wickets. Jason Holder, in particular, was very miserly and ended up with tremendous figures.

Sheldon Cottrell was a bit off-color and strayed with his lengths. He should get used to the surface and adapt better in the upcoming matches. The West Indian players did not lose hearts when there was a good partnership for the third wicket and kept waiting for their opportunity.

Reducing Afghanistan from 126/2 to 19 all-out is a commendable effort. The new players like Romario Shepherd and Hayden Walsh also had a good day in the field. They are going to become more comfortable with the international playing conditions and become better as the series progresses as well.

The star of the match, both with the bat and ball was Roston Chase. He picked up two wickets, bowled his full-quote of overs for just 31 runs, and then scored 94 in the chase. He only got out when a handful of runs were left, probably trying to get to his century in a hurry.

Shai Hope also scored 77 runs and remained not out. Nicholas Pooran, Kieron Pollard, Romari Shepherd, and Jason Holder were all left unutilized showing the kind of depth that the West Indies has.

We don’t think there is anything that the West Indies needs to change ahead of the second match. They have started with pretty much the perfect performance and just need to maintain the tempo. Look out for an explosive inning from Shimron Hetmyer down the line since he is not going to allow the Afghan medium-pacers or their floaty spinners to settle at all.

Pitch and Conditions

The weather forecast for Lucknow is excellent and we are not going to see any weather-related interruptions in the second ODI as well. The pitch was flat and a little slow to start with. It become better as the lights came on probably because of the effect of dew.

The spinners are not going to have too much to work with and will need to rely on accuracy to build up the pressure on the opposing batsmen.

A score of around 260-270 appears to be par for the surface.

AFG vs WI Betting Tips

We are disappointed at the direction in which Afghanistan’s recent ODI cricket has gone. Its batting does not give us any confidence whatsoever and the bowling also is not too threatening right now. The West Indies have all the advantages.
