Indian Premier League 6th edition (IPL 6) is about to begin and will be held from April 3 – May 26, 2013. There are in all nine teams participating in this season – Kolkata Knight Riders, Delhi Daredevils, Pune Warriors India, Chennai Super Kings, Kings XI Punjab, Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Sunrisers Hyderabad. There are 72 league matches to be played, two qualifiers, 1 eliminator match and the final that will be played on May 26, 2013.
The first match of IPL 6 will be played between the IPL 5 winners Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and one of the most consistent performers of all IPL seasons Delhi Daredevils (DD). The match will be played at KKR’s home ground, Eden Gardens, Kolkata at 8.30 PM IST on April 3, 2013.
As mentioned earlier, KKR are the latest winners who had won IPL 5 under the brave and aggressive leadership of Indian opener Gautam Gambhir. The team had performed quite superbly since last two IPL after the change of leadership. The team has some fantastic all-rounders like Jacques Kallis, Yusuf Pathan, Shakib Al Hassan; bowlers like Sunil Narine, Brett Lee and Lakshmipathy Balaji. The team looks very solid in all departments and the aggressive captaincy also helps the team to perform. There are more likely chances of KKR winning this opening game and setting the tempo right.
DD has not won a single IPL trophy till now but they have been among the most consistent performing teams. The team is led by Mahela Jayawardene from Sri Lanka but due to controversies regarding the playing of Sri Lankan players in IPL, there is still doubtrs over his playing the game and IPL. Other big shock for the team was the absence of Jesse Ryder who is in critical condition due to the incident that happened recently. However, the team has strong players like Virender Sehwag, Ajit Agarkar, Unmukt Chand, Morne Morkel, Umesh Yadav, Naman Ojha, Irfan Pathan and David Warner. But the team needs to be consistent and the key players need to perform to win the opening match.
KKR will be on a high after winning the IPL edition last year and also playing at their home ground is a big advantage for them. They would like to continue from where they stopped last year and they have all players available which is also yet another advantage. DD has their own set of problems such as form of their star batsmen Sehwag, David Warner and Irfan Pathan; absence of Jesse Ryder and uncertainty of Jayawardene playing in this game. This means that a lot of pressure comes on other players of DD and they need to perform. Looking at the form of the players and the team, history and the home ground advantage, KKR seems to be strong favorite to win the opening match of the IPL 6.
