PAK vs BAN Match Prediction - Feb 07, 2020

Pakistan and Bangladesh are about to play the first of two tests, the gap between which will be close to two months, so it is more like two one-off tests rather than a two-test series. The strange scheduling aside, it is good to see test cricket being played in Pakistan after almost a decade of nothingness.

Pakistan is coming into this match with a fair bit of confidence performing very well against Sri Lanka. Bangladesh is not going to be shy to admit that its test cricket levels are far below what is desirable. A lack of bowling strength and batsmen that consistently fail to turn starts into something significant have been the bane of Bangladesh cricket for quite some time now.

Is there a surprise in store, then?

Pakistan vs Bangladesh 1st Test 2020 is going to be played at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, Rawalpindi starting on the 7th of February 2020.

PAK vs BAN Team Previews

Pakistan

Pakistan has named a 16 member squad for a test match at home, something which signifies the uncertainty that the team faces in test match cricket. A new captain, some new faces in the squad, and a new coach are all trying to combine for the long term success of Pakistan’s test team and a rise in the World Test Championship rankings.

A lot of the weaknesses in Pakistan cricket are going to be glossed over while playing at home, particularly against a team like Bangladesh.

We expect Azhar Ali, Abid Ali, Shan Masood, Babar Azam, Asad Shafiq, and Haris Sohail to be a part of the batting lineup for this first test against Pakistan. There is going to be a lot of hue and cry over the position of Fawad Alam in the playing eleven but we don’t think he is going to get an opportunity just yet.

With Mohammad Rizwan and a number of all-rounders available, the Pakistani batting lineup is quite strong in home conditions.

The bowling is going to be led by Mohammad Abbas, Shaheen Afridi, and Naseem Shah with Yasir Shah as the spinner. There is a huge question mark over the ability of Mohammad Abbas to be an effective wicket-taker in Pakistani conditions especially now that his pace has dropped.

Naseem Shah is going to ruffle up the batsmen with his extra pace while Shaheen Afridi will ask tough questions with his left-arm angle as well. Pakistan’s bowling attack is far superior to Bangladesh’s and that is vital in test cricket.

Bangladesh

Bangladesh’s performances can often seem at odds with the promise they show on paper. We have too often expected Bangladesh cricket to rise up from its low position in world cricket only to see it fall back once again.

On this occasion, though, Bangladesh comes with very little hope to Pakistan. Test cricket has not been Bangladesh’s forte and it is going to require something really special for Bangladesh to be able to beat Pakistan in its own den.

The Bangladeshi batting is not too bad. Tamim Iqbal just scored a triple century, the highest ever first-class score by a Bangladeshi batsman, and must be in a good frame of mind. Players like Soumya Sarkar, Mominul Haque, Mahmudullah, Liton Das, and Majmul Hossain Shanto promise a lot.

They are going to enjoy the conditions in Pakistan, which can be very flat and favorable for the batsmen, not unfamiliar to what Bangladesh has as well.

The tough task is going to be to fight off the new ball and concentrating for long periods of time.

The bowlers will struggle to take twenty wickets. In fact, it is very difficult to see a scenario where Bangladesh is able to bowl Pakistan out twice to win this match. Rubel Hossain, Abu Jayed, and Al-Amin Hossain seem to be the likely fast-bowlers picked alongside Taijul Islam as the lone spinner.

There is a distinct lack of quality in this bowling lineup and unless there is a lot of help from the surface, these bowlers are not going to be able to trouble the Pakistani batsmen.

Pitch and Conditions

The weather in Rawalpindi is expected to be absolutely perfect for cricket. There is no threat of rain and we should be able to enjoy an uninterrupted test match. The pitch at Rawalpindi is famous for having a little something in it for the fast bowlers. Batting may be a bit tough on the first morning but the wicket flattens out nicely to have plenty of runs in it as well.
