Our Prediction: to win, N/A Bet on to win for Real Money
After the first Test match ended in a draw, the two nations will face each other in the 2nd Test match that starts on 8th Jan at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Sri Lanka fared very well in the first outing, considering their lack of exposure to this format in recent months; Pakistan fought back hard to hold their ground and came out strong to draw the match. Both sides are matched equally and will come out all guns blazing to put up a tougher fight in the upcoming Test match; whichever team strategizes well and uses its resources effectively will emerge victorious here.
While the first innings saw great success for the bowlers, the 2nd innings was a struggle as they couldn’t stop the run flow and ended up with a steep target of 302 runs. While Junaid finished with 8 wickets in total, Bhatti got 5 wickets and Ajmal claimed 2 wickets in the first innings; the other bowlers didn’t fare quite well and it was up to the batsmen to get their team safely home. In reply to 204 runs, Pakistan posted 383 runs with a partnership of 218 runs scored by Misbah and Younis Khan for the 4th wicket; while Younis scored 136 runs off 198 deliveries, his captain posted 135 runs off 306 balls. With the target of 202 runs in the 2nd innings, Ahmed Shehzad and Hafeez posted a 101-run stand for the 2nd wicket and the latter’s unbeaten 80 ensured the team got to a draw safely. The players were satisfied with the result but will try their very best to wrap up a win in the second match.
Put to bat first, the top order couldn’t hold out for long and they were struggling at 76-4; Mathews took charge and scored 91 runs but with lack of good support from the other end, the team was all out in 65 overs with 204 runs on board. The 2nd innings saw a much better performance with Silva and Sangakkara posting a 99-run stand; later on Mathews, Chandimal and Prasanna punished the Pakistani bowlers to take the total to a massive 480 runs. Mathews finished with an unbeaten 157 runs off 343 deliveries, posting a 138 run partnership with Chandimal and a 156-run stand with Prasanna. However, the bowlers couldn’t get the opponents out and though Lakmal and Herath got a wicket each, the match was drawn. Earlier, Eranga and Herath had taken 3 wickets each, Lakmal claimed 2 wickets and Mathews got 1 wicket to neutralise the attack of the Pakistani batsmen, but they weren’t successful in the 2nd innings. The team will definitely put to use the lessons learnt here and come up with a better game plan in the 2nd match.
Sri Lanka has good bowlers with Lakmal and Eranga spearheading the attack and Mathews is in good form on the batting front; Pakistan has peaked with its batting performance and bowlers like Junaid Khan and Bhatti will be key to their success. While both teams are well matched and can fight tooth and nail to get a result, a draw seems the most likely result because of good batting lineups and flat pitch.
