SL vs ENG Match Prediction - Jan 22, 2021

England played brilliantly in the first match and Sri Lanka was bad to the point of being embarrassing to ensure that England continued its winning run on the island. It has now won its previous four test matches straight in Sri Lanka and goes into this next match as the firm favorite.

There are going to be changes in both the teams, no doubt about that, as Sri Lanka tried to stage a comeback and England prepares for a tough six matches in eight weeks ahead.

We do not know if the same strip is going to be used for the second test but the square has seen a lot of wear and tear, so a lot more spin is going to be on offer.

Sri Lanka vs England 2nd Test Match 2021 is going to be played at the Galle International Stadium, Galle starting on the 22nd of January 2021.

SL vs ENG Team Previews

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka batted horrendously in the first inning of the previous match and basically took itself out of contention. To squander such a chance after winning the toss is just not acceptable and even an excellent batting performance in the second inning could not save it.

The task is tough in this next test. Dimuth Karunaratne, the regular captain is going to be missing, while Kusal Mendis has been dropped because of his poor form. Suranga Lakmal is expected to be fit and available for this test and so he could be the only pacer on the team.

Sri Lanka batted pretty well in the second inning with runs from Kusal Perera, Angelo Mathews, and Lahiru Thirimanne. All three will need to repeat the same in this next test and hope that a couple of others like Dinesh Chandimal and Niroshan Dickwella join the party.

The bowling that they are facing is not the most difficult and England is likely to use a completely new pace-bowling lineup in this match. The potential for Sri Lanka to get some massive runs in this series exists.

Among the bowlers, Dilruwan Perera and Lasith Embuldeniya are going to bowl the bulk of the overs with help from Wanindu Hasaranga and possibly Suranga Lakmal as the fast bowler.

Sri Lanka is playing in its own conditions but it does not have too many genuine match-winners anymore. Even the spin bowlers are not too much better than what England possesses, a shame for a country that had Muralitharan and Herath to bank on for the longest time.

Sri Lanka Playing 11

Kusal Perera, HDRL Thirimanne, Oshada Fernando, Dinesh Chandimal, Angelo Mathews, Niroshan Dickwella, Ramesh Mendis, Dilruwan Perera, Suranga Lakmal, Lasith Embuldeniya, Asitha Fernando.

England

England’s batting fired brilliantly in the first match led by a double century from Joe Root. We don’t think there is going to be any change in the batting lineup for this match. There are three players that will return for the series against India and so runs are going to be at a premium.

Players like Dom Sibley, Daniel Lawrence, and Jonny Bairstow are going to be under pressure to score before Rory Burns, Ben Stokes, and Ollie Pope make a return.

Zak Crawley did not get many runs and was out cheaply in both innings. He is a naturally attacking player but his proficiency against spin is still under question. With Daniel Lawrence making an impact, Jos Buttler dangerous as ever, and Joe Root in top-form, England has enough to keep the Sri Lankan bowlers at bay.

It also helps that they are not going to face the toughest bowling attack in the world.

James Anderson, Olly Stone, and Chris Woakes are expected to play in this match. This would be a huge-relief for Sri Lanka as they did not have an answer to Stuart Broad. This possible replacement attack is no slouch either, though.

Jack leach and Dominic Bess will continue as the two spinners since Moeen Ali is not available for selection.

England has resources and depth that are far beyond what Sri Lanka has. The only question was about the conditions that they are going to face and so far England has been able to combat them with ease.

England Playing 11

Zak Crawley, Dominic Sibley, Jonny Bairstow, JE Root, Daniel Lawrence, Jos Buttler, Sam Curran, Dominic Bess, Jack Leach, Mark Wood, James Anderson.

SL vs ENG Toss Prediction

Winning the toss was a huge advantage that Sri Lanka squandered in the previous match. The advantage may be bigger in this game as the pitch could break up faster. There is no doubt that the team winning the toss is going to bat first.

Read our guide on toss predictions to learn how we analyze and come up with our tips.

Pitch and Conditions

There is some rain around in Galle but the match moves fast enough that the draw is never really a possibility. We expect the pitch for this match to be more vicious than the previous one. It will spin more and possibly have some uneven bounce as well.

Batting could be quite difficult from Day 2 onward.

The trick here is to get enough runs in the first inning to put pressure on the opposition. Not rocket science really!

SL vs ENG Betting Tips

We would advise the punters to wait till the toss is done before placing their bets. Batting first is a big advantage and should be taken into consideration. That being said, England has the upper hand in every single aspect of the game. More importantly, it also has shown itself to be very adept at playing spin in testing conditions.

Bet on England to win.

Our Favorite Bets

England Top Batsman 1st Inning - Joe Root ($5.50) (Betway Boost)

To get the England captain to top-score for England at 5.5x returns is just incredible. This is not something that would have happened without the Betway boost, though, as the price was $3.25 before that.

This one of those times to jump on this. Root is in great form and plays spin very well. He also makes the most of his form and tends to score in streaks. Stay on the Joe Root bandwagon and make a killing!

Sri Lanka Top Bowler 1st Inning - Dilruwan Perera ($2.80) (ComeOn)

There are only two options to realistically win this bet. Dilruwan Perera and Lasith Embuldeniya. Of the two, we think Perera is the better bowler and is going to be more impactful in the second test match.

His faster pace of bowler and sharp turn is going to be very hard for the England batsmen to face.
