Our Prediction: Sri Lanka to win, 1.57 Bet on Sri Lanka to win for Real Money
Sri Lanka defeated West Indies by an innings and 6 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the test series; the two teams will now face other in the 2nd Test at Colombo from 22nd Oct. The hosts put up a massive 484 runs in the first innings, which proved to be too difficult for the Windies to achieve. The bowlers did very well to outwit the visitors and take the team safely to a huge win. West Indies will need to pull up their socks and come back stronger if they want to draw level here; the contest will surely give an opportunity to the Lankan youngsters to showcase their talents and prove their abilities.
Karunaratne and Dinesh Chandimal posted heroic centuries to steer the first innings to 484 after electing to bat first; the duo set up a 238-run stand for the 3rd wicket, helping the team set up the massive target, which was defended well by the spinners led by Herath’s 10 wicket haul.
Angelo Mathews contributed with 48 runs and Kusal Perera tried to get the scoreboard ticking but the others failed to impress. With the ball, Dhammika Prasad also shone with a total of 4 wickets while Siriwardana, Pradeep and Kaushal helped in stifling the opponents.
The top order is looking good to stabilize the innings whether batting first or during chase; Karunaratne’s 186 off 354 deliveries proves that he is a determined batsman. Players like Silva, Thirimanne and Perera need to be more focused on getting the big runs. Herath is in his peak right now and is vital to their spin attack while Prasad, Pradeep and Siriwardanaare looking good to provide the regular breakthroughs.
DevendraBishoo made a good impact with his spin bowling as he claimed 4 wickets in the first innings; Taylor also took 2 key wickets while Roach, Gabriel, Holder and Samuels claimed a wicket each but the fielding was sloppy, which gave away too many runs.
With the bat however, except Darren Bravo, who made a half century, the others failed to carry the momentum forward and lost the opportunity to take a lead with the runs. Blackwood tried hard to get his team the required runs by posting a well-made 92 in the 2nd innings but with hardly any support from others down the order, the effort went in vain.
Players like Brathwaite, Marlon Samuels, Ramdin and Holder need to come out all guns blazing if they want to survive the Lankan attack; the bowling department looks good but they need to execute their plan to perfection in order to restrict the opposition in their own backyard.
The Windies were outsmarted by the Lankans in the first test but the visitors definitely have the resources to bounce back; although the contest will be well fought by West Indies, Sri Lanka clearly go in as favourites to win the upcoming match and series.
