The cricket frenzy nation, West Indies will host the fourth season of the Caribbean Premier League and this year it’ll be all the more special as the men and women of the country rightly celebrate their World T20 titles. The 2nd match of the CPL will be held between Patriots and Amazon Warriors on 30th June at Basseterre; while the Patriots will look to change their fortunes from last year when they ended up at the bottom of the table, Warriors who lost out in the knock-out stages last season, will try to dominate the others right from the first match. It needs to be seen which side can keep a cool head above its shoulders and emerge victorious on Thursday.
Faf du Plessis is in very good nick with the bat and will try to lead the team from the front; Lendl Simmons, Brad Hodge, Kieron Powell, Evin Lewis and all-rounders Carlos Brathwaite, Jonathan Carter and Thisara Perera will form the core of the batting line-up.
The bowling department consists of experienced fast-bowlers like Tino Best, Perera, Brathwaite and Krishmar Santokie while the spinners include Samuel Badree, chinaman Tabraiz Shamsi, JJ Smuts, Shamarh Brooks and Brad Hodge.
Youngsters like Alzarri Joseph, Jeremiah Louis and Nikhil Dutta will try to put their best foot forward to add depth to the attack and overall they have a good balance in spin and pace to outwit the Warriors here. . Whether batting first on during chase, they will need to keep focus on building a strong foundation and setting up steady partnerships till the end.
Martin Guptill, the experienced Kiwi opener, brings years of expertise with the bat and will try to lead from the front here. Chris Lynn, Dwayne Smith and Rayad Emrit are the other batsmen who have experience in handling pressure situations and they will need to combine well with the youngsters like Shimron Hetmyer, Assad Fudadin, Chris Barnwell, Steven Katwaroo and Orlando Peters to help the team set up solid foundations.
Overseas bowlers like Sohail Tanvir and Ali Khan add the edge to the pace attack while spinner Adam Zampa is in very good form and is well aware of the conditions here, having excelled in the Tri-Series here recently. Devendra Bishoo, Barnwell, Steven Jacobs, Jason Mohammed, Paul Wintz and Veerasammy Permaul will add depth and variety to the attack.
They have a well-balanced team with expert batsmen and bowlers, who can prove to be match-winners under crunch situations; Guptill will need to inspire the youngsters and along with other top-order batsmen must come out all guns blazing on Thursday.
This is the first match for both teams and they will try to start their campaign with a win here; while the Warriors have tasted better success than Patriots the last time around, the contest will surely be well-fought by both teams. While Warriors do have some big names, we feel that Patriots with a stronger batting line-up is better placed to take the first round here on Thursday.
