PlayUp Review

PlayUp is Australian-owned and -operated. The operator is licensed through the Northern Territory Racing Commission, which is good news.

Australian gambling regulations are very strict and focus on player protections. Whilst each state and territory has its own gambling jurisdiction, there are also laws governing on a federal level that regulate every form of gambling, including online betting.

An operator that is licensed in Australia can therefore be considered safe and well-regulated.

Whether or not that makes them trustworthy is another question. PlayUp is still quite new. Whilst many of their players came from the previous three bookmakers that merged to become PlayUp, the operator still have to prove itself.

We have hardly seen any complaints about them, however, and nothing out of the ordinary. There are always disgruntled bettors, but PlayUp seems to also have a strong focus on customer service, which is helpful.

Cricket betting and other sports

Cricket is not the main focus at PlayUp. But since Australians are avid cricket players and fans, the sport is, of course, featured here as well. In fact, you can either find a league in the ‘Featured’ section, which was the case for Big Bash Matches at the time we reviewed this bookmaker. Or you go through the list in the ‘Sports’ section and find all available cricket events, where upcoming matches are listed.

Keep in mind that PlayUp is a relatively small bookmaker. They cover Australian cricket quite well but may fall behind in international cricket. Oddly, we weren’t able to get into all the available markets for all upcoming matches either.

For instance, only one match taking place during the next three days had further markets to bet on, whilst there were only outright match bets available for the other meetups. Perhaps it was a glitch in the system, however. Still not good, but not as worrisome as a lack of markets.

In any case, available betting options exist for:

  • Match Winner
  • Highest Score First Over
  • Team to Score the Most Sixes
  • Man of the Match
  • To Score 25 / 50
  • To Hit A Six
  • Winning Margin

And these were less than half the available markets for a match of the Melbourne Renegades against the Perth Scorchers.

Beyond cricket, PlayUp has a strong focus as a racing bookmaker. Horse racing has a strong history in Australia, but there is also plenty of dog racing you can bet on as well as harness racing.

There’s a separate section at PlayUp covering everything racing related.

Fantasy sports also gets its own section and has been a big deal at PlayUp since the beginning. Don’t be irritated, however, when you click on it as you will be forwarded to DraftStars, which is basically a subsidiary. Here you will find everything you could want in fantasy sports.

PlayUp covers about two dozen sports in total, where you can enjoy plenty of betting. As a smaller bookmaker, you won’t find smaller leagues or more obscure sports here. So, if you want to bet on futsal, you have to go elsewhere.

Promotions and bonuses

As per a change in Australian gambling laws from 2019, bookmakers and online casinos are no longer allowed to offer welcome bonuses. For some, this might be irritating as there seems to be no added incentive to sign up at any particular bookmaker. However, this is aimed at protecting customers, especially considering that welcome bonuses can have very strict terms and conditions that are difficult to fulfil.

PlayUp therefore does not offer a welcome bonus. But regular customers will be able to peruse a range of promotions here that change regularly. Alas, unless you open an account at PlayUp, you won’t even get an idea as to which promotions might be available here. Only customers who are logged in will see bonuses and promotions.

Banking options

Click on the small green speech bubble to access the help section at PlayUp. You’ll find FAQs for banking listed here and whilst there is not a lot of information available at a glance, you will at least find out that credit cards, debit cards, POLi, BPAY and bank transfer are accepted deposit methods. Since these are usually available for withdrawals as well, you can expect that to be the case here too.

The other question in this section is about withdrawal processing, which is not done on the weekends or on public holidays. Otherwise, withdrawal requests received by 11am AEST, will be processed on the same day.

And that’s about all the information about banking there is available without speaking to customer services. We also don’t know whether there are any withdrawal fees or limits.

The aforementioned green speech bubble will also allow you to contact the customer service team. Apart from getting access to the FAQs, you can simply click on “Support” and open up a live chat window. Type your question and as soon as someone is available, you’ll receive an answer.

Live chat is available between 7 AM and 11 PM AEST, which is okay. Most Australian sports betting will be done within that time frame.

Alternatively, you can write an email or make a call to the support team during the same times. Only sports betting via phone is manned 24/7.

The customer service team is friendly, professional and helpful.

The PlayUp website is functional. It’s not particularly attractive, but neither is it ugly. Thankfully, there aren’t any distracting gimmicks here and we like its smooth operation. In that regard, it is modern and very easy to use. For instance, just clicking on the green speech bubble gives us a neat experience of quickly navigating where you want to go.

There is no lag when browsing the site and new punters should not feel overwhelmed when they visit PlayUp.

Of course, PlayUp is also available via mobile, which appears to have been a bit of an afterthought initially as the PlayUp mobile page wasn’t very good initially. Now it’s just as good as the desktop site. However, punters will have the option of downloading dedicated betting apps for iOS and Android, which might be the preferable option.

PlayUp is certainly a good option for Australian punters who love to bet on racing and cricket. Keep in mind that the bookmaker is smaller and whilst a good number of sports is covered here, it’s not one of the big international bookmakers that allows you to be on local leagues in South America as well.

The focus is, of course, on Australia, and there is nothing wrong with that. You can get good odds here, though no live streaming. You will be able to use some decent promotions but won’t get a welcome bonus. You may not find all the information you need prior to signing up, but the customer service is friendly and helpful, making up for everything that you might be missing.

PlayUp has yet to prove itself, but they are worth considering if you are looking for a safe, Australian-owned and -regulated bookmaker.
