We are down to the final three fixtures in the Plunkett Shield and the fate of the tournament is already decided. Canterbury Kings are all set to finish at the top while Wellington Firebirds are sure to get the wooden spoon. However, there's still a battle royale between the four remaining teams to finish as higher at the ladder as possible. Auckland Aces will take the field in their last remaining match in a bid to finish at the top of the table. They play their next game against the Firebirds, who no longer have the possibility to finish any higher than they currently are. The match is set to be played at Eden Park Outer Oval, Auckland, on April 2nd, 2021.
Going into their previous match, Auckland Aces desperately needed a win to get to the second spot on the ladder, but they failed to do so. Having said that, they managed to register a draw against Canterbury Kings, who have been the best side of the competition, and that in itself was a commendable achievement.
Considering that this upcoming match is against the team placed at the bottom of the table for the Aces, they are likely to fare better. In the seven matches so far, Auckland Aces have won just two and this match will be a perfect opportunity for them to grab a win and finish at the second spot on the ladder.
On paper, Auckland Aces have a fantastic side, which showed its batting strength in the last match. Their bowlers were spectacular in dismissing Canterbury Kings for a nothing total before their batsmen racked up a towering total in the third innings. The fact that they couldn't get a favorable result can also be attributed to some poor captaincy decisions. In the hindsight, their bowlers did not have enough time to dismiss the Kings in the fourth innings as Kings easily managed to draw the game even while batting on a tricky surface. Although it is too late, the Aces seems to have found the touch they are known for. They would want to finish the tournament on a high and if their players can put together a similar kind of performance, getting a win should not be difficult for the Aces.

Wellington Firebirds had a terrific start to their cricketing season this year as they won the Super Smash title. However, they haven't had a similar kind of fate in the longer version of the game. They have played seven matches in the tournament, but are yet to get off the mark as far as a win is concerned. Languishing at the bottom of the table with 32 points to their name, Wellington Firebirds can no longer go any higher on the ladder, but would still want to finish the tournament on a happy note.
Wellington Firebirds have played more like a limited-overs team in the tournament and just when it looked like that the strategy will pay off for them, rain hampered their chances of getting their maiden win of the tournament. They were in a terrific position in the previous match, against the Knights, before rain intervened and the match had to be abandoned.
Wellington Firebirds would be pretty happy with their experienced players contributing with the bat in the last game. Barring Michael Bracewell and Jakob Bhula, all of their top six batsmen scored a fifty each in the last match. Tom Blundell and Rachin Ravindra were brilliant as they both scored a century each with Blundell staying unbeaten till the very end.
Cricket is a game of confidence and even though Wellington have had a poor tournament so far, the last match's performance would have brimmed them full of confidence. If they can pull up a similar performance, the Aces will have their work cut out.
Luke Georgeson, Rachin Ravindra, Michael Bracewell, Jakob Bhula, Tom Blundell, Troy Johnson, Jamie Gibson, Peter Younghusband, Iain McPeake, Logan van Beek, Ben Sears.
Although the match carries no real significance in the tournament, ending a tournament on a high can so often be of high importance. Both sides looked to be in their prime form in their last respective matches and should come out hard in this one as well. Comparing the two sides on paper, Auckland Aces appear to be a better unit. Additionally, they have had a better tournament and will be more confident of the two sides. For that reason, betting on Auckland's win should be the way to go here.
