AA vs WF Match Prediction - Mar 04, 2023

The Plunket Shield 2022-23 season continues with an exciting encounter between Auckland and Wellington. The match is scheduled to be played from 4th March 2023 at Eden Park Outer Oval in Auckland. Both teams will be looking to secure a win in this match to improve their position on the points table.

In terms of recent head-to-head encounters, Auckland have enjoyed more. From the last five matches, Auckland have emerged on top twice whereas Wellington have managed to come out at the top only once.

Wellington are arguably in a better position on the ladder but it can all change pretty quickly should the result of this match not go their way. A win, however, will place them in an excellent position. Both these sides have a lot to play for, albeit contrasting for reasons. Regardless, we expect a cracker of a contest here in this match.

AA vs WF Team Previews

Auckland Aces

Auckland, led by Robert O'Donnell, haven't been at their best in the tournament so far. In fact, they have been so poor that they are staring at an early elimination from the competition as well as are prime candidates for getting a wooden spoon. While their original squad had plenty of experienced players, the absence of those players has certainly hurt them.

Auckland has been in utterly poor form in the Plunket Shield, winning just one of the four matches they have played. They currently occupy the bottom-most spot on the points table, and a loss here will further sink them. A win here, however, may well end up pushing them to the third spot, provided a couple of other results go their way.

On paper, Auckland have a rather inexperienced side that has cracked under pressure earlier too. They'll be up against a side that has been in prime form and getting past them isn't going to be easy. Having said that, they do have the necessary talent and if they can play to their potential here, they will be in business big time.

Ben Horne, Adithya Ashok, Quinn Sunde, Danru Ferns, George Worker, Lockie Ferguson, Mark Chapman, Robert O'Donnell, Sean Solia, William O'Donnell, William Somerville.

Wellington Firebirds

Wellington too didn't have their full-strength side available to them for most part but they have done remarkably well despite that. They are one of the prime candidates for topping the table but would need at least a couple of results to go their way. This is an excellent opportunity to narrow the gap for the top spot and they will certainly be targeting a huge win here.

Although they have managed just a couple wins in their five matches so far, they haven't lost too many matches. A loss here, however, will really open up the gates for the teams below them to cover the gap and rise up the ladder. They are currently second on the ladder with 53 points to their name, coming off two wins and as many losses.

Wellington have a strong side but it would be interesting to see if their international players are available. If they are, it is going to be mighty difficult for Auckland to challenge them here in this match. If not, Wellington would still be ahead but their youngsters will need to step-up their game to keep the momentum.

AA vs WF Toss Prediction

The surface here at Auckland is unlikely to change a lot over the course of the match, owing to wet and cool conditions. What that would mean is that the quick bowlers are likely to enjoy bowling here, especially during the early hours with the new ball. Both sides will be looking to seize the advantage on the first morning and for that reason, we expect the captain winning the toss to elect to bat first.

Pitch and Conditions

The pitch at the Eden Park Outer Oval is generally known to be a good batting surface, with some assistance for the fast bowlers early on. The weather conditions in Auckland can be quite unpredictable, with rain and overcast conditions likely to play a significant role in the outcome of the match. Anything over 300 runs batting first should be a good score here.

AA vs WF Betting Tips

Even though the two sides are miles apart on the ladder, this match promises to be a lot closer than what it appears from the outset. Auckland will be looking to get into the thick of things while Wellington will be looking to bridge the gap with the top spot. Fans can expect to see some top-quality cricket as both teams battle it out on the field. Considering the on-paper combinations of the two sides and other aforementioned reasons, a bet on Wellington win should be the way to go here.
