AA vs WF Match Prediction - Dec 31, 2021

With the new year coming up, Super Smash 2021 is all set to break for a week and the focus will now shift to the Ford Trophy 2021 as far as the New Zealand domestic cricket is concerned. The Ford Trophy is still in its initial phase and the next few matches are going to be exciting.

Auckland Aces are yet to even test the waters in the tournament and are all set to play their first match against Wellington Firebirds on 1st January 2021 at Basin Reserve, Wellington. These two are two of the best teams in New Zealand Cricket and should produce a cracker of a contest. This is certainly not the match to be missed.

AA vs WF Team Previews

Auckland Aces

This will be the Aces' first outing in the tournament and they will want to get their fifty-over campaign off to a positive note. They are doing a reasonably good job in the Super Smash and will be looking to convert the confidence drawn from that format into the results in a little longer format. These are early days for them, but a win here will immediately push them to the third spot on the points table and that's exactly what they'll be looking for.

In their last limited-overs game, which was in Super Smash, Auckland Aces defeated Otago Volts by a massive margin as they chased down a 129-run total with eight wickets in hand and 17 balls to spare. Their bowlers and batsmen all contributed as per the plan. The return to form of George Worker and Mark Chapman, who both scored a fifty each, is certainly a big positive for them as that directly strengthens their top-order with Martin Guptill already doing well.

Although The Ford Trophy is a different format altogether, we expect Auckland Aces to come out with an almost similar side in the next game. Just like the Firebirds, the Aces too bat deep and match in the batting department. Their bowling seems a little too over-dependent on Lokie Ferguson and if their young bowlers are able to hold their nerves in crunch situations, getting past Auckland Aces is going to be incredibly difficult.

Wellington Firebirds

In quite a contrast to how they have done in the shortest format of the game, Wellington Firebirds have been in terrific form in the longer white-ball format and are currently leading the points table. At the moment, they are placed at the top with two wins in two matches coupled with a terrific net run rate of 1.080.

This is a tournament wherein the matches are not played as frequently in the other limited-overs tournament and getting into a groove can be a bit difficult. The Firebirds have still managed to do a wonderful job thus far. They started off their campaign with a close win over Otago Volts and then followed tat up with a huge win against the same team in their subsequent contest.

Batting first against Otago Volts in their last match, Wellington Firebirds racked up a total of 333 runs in total with contributions coming in from almost all their players. After Finn Allen was dismissed for a personal score of eight, Rachin Ravindra and Tom Blundell combined to bring Firebirds into the game before Troy Johnson, Michael Bracewell, and Ollie Newton help them finish with a flourish.

The Volts were set to chase a total of 238 runs, which proved to be a little too much for the Volts. Ollie Newton, Hamish Bennett, and Michael Bracewell bowled exceedingly well for the Firebirds, picking up seven wickets between them at the expense of 118 runs in a little under 24 overs.

Wellington Firebirds' biggest strength is their experience with the likes of Bennett, Bracewell, Ravindra, and Blundell available. Besides, they have the exciting young talent available, which complements the experience to perfection. Also, with their bowlers pretty capable to swing their bats, the Firebirds bat deep. All in all, the Firebirds do not really have any apparent flaw at the moment and if they are able to play to their potential, beating them will be very difficult in the matches to follow.

Wellington Firebirds Playing 11

Finn Allen, Luke Georgeson, Jakob Bhula, Troy Johnson, Michael Bracewell, Nathan Smith, Logan van Beek, Ollie Newton, Peter Younghusband, Ben Sears, Hamish Bennett.

AA vs WF Betting Tips

We have not seen Auckland Aces play in the tournament yet in the competition and there will certainly be some nerves there. Wellington Firebirds, on the other hand, have already played and won a couple of matches and will likely be brimming with confidence. Both these sides are pretty much neck and neck in the batting department and choosing between the two simply on that basis is rather difficult. Having said that, considering their respective bowling attacks and the other above-stated factors, the Firebirds seem ahead, albeit marginally. We expect this match to go right down to the wire with Wellington Firebirds coming out on top. Bet on Wellington Firebirds to register a close win here.
