About the Match
Perth Scorchers continue to hold the second position on the points table with 8 points from six matches played and will now face Adelaide Strikers, who are presently in the 5th place with 5 points from five matches played so far, on Jan 16 at the Western Australia Cricket Association Ground, Perth. The two sides will battle fiercely as the competition has gotten stiffer with the league reaching the critical stage and with eyes on the top four positions, players will put their best foot forward here on Thursday.
It was a dismal batting performance by the Strikers in the last match against Melbourne Stars; opting to bat first, the top order collapsed except for Klinger who fought a lone battle against the Stars speedsters. Klinger made 42 runs form 49 balls and while his efforts were valiant, he got no support from the rest of the batting line-up who succumbed to pressure. Though Kane Richardson’s 21 runs off 24 balls gave some hope, he was run-out and the team could manage only 90 runs. The total was never going to be enough against the Stars, who are at the top of their game and the bowlers failed to defend the team’s miserable score. Though Neser took 2 wickets, they couldn’t stop the Stars from reaching the target in just 8 overs and with this loss, the players suffered a major dent to their spirit. However, they need to play with a positive attitude and come up with a better performance if they want to keep their hopes alive this season.
Yasir Arafat came through for his team as he bowled superbly, keeping his nerves together in the one-over eliminator to win the thrilling match against Sydney Sixers by taking 2 wickets. Earlier, he had taken 4 wickets in the 2nd innings and along with Behrendorff’s 3 wickets, Hogg and Voges’ wicket each, the speedster contributed with a brilliant performance. Batting first, the Scorchers lost early wickets of Simmons and Mitchell Marsh in the very first over , but Katich and Whiteman posted a 129-run partnership for the 3rd wicket to turn the game in their favour as they kept the scoreboard ticking and steered to a defendable 153 runs. While Katich scored 71 runs off 56 deliveries, Whiteman posted 53 runs off 49 balls and Voges helped in the end to get his team to a decent total. The bowlers Arafat and Behrendorff bowled magnificently to demolish the Sixers and kept their cool when the match was tied to finish on a winning note. The team will definitely try to play to their strengths once again here.
While both teams will definitely give a tough fight to each other, the hosts have had a better run in the league so far and will make it difficult for the Strikers to edge past them. While the visitors would have learnt some tough lessons from their previous defeat, it will be an uphill task for them to beat Scorchers on home turf. Though the match could either way, the hosts seem to be positioned better to win this match.
