Things are beginning to take shape beautifully just as we approach the half-way stage in the Big Bash League 2019. Sydney Sixers and Adelaide Strikers met a couple of days ago to produce a scintillating high-scoring encounter. Fans would be expecting yet another close encounter between the two sides as they lock horns for the second time in the tournament. This time though, they are set to lock horns at Adelaide's home-ground and the Strikers will be fancying their chances. The match is to be played on Wednesday, 8th Janurary, at Adelaide Oval. The two teams are placed next to each other on the points table and produced a humdinger of a game when they met last time. Considering the stakes and how the two teams are on paper, we expect a close contest this time around as well.
With three wins and a couple of losses to their name, Adelaide Strikers are placed at the third spot on the ladder. They have a pretty decent net run-rate of 0.273 and that can come in pretty handy towards the back-end of the tournament. While a win here wouldn't really bring about any change in their standings, a loss would certainly make way for the other teams to displace them from their position and that is something the Strikers would not really want.
They are coming off a pretty good outing against the Sixers, the match which they were a bit unfortunate to lose. They did pretty well for most part of the match from winning the toss to putting up a solid total on the board, but terrific batting by Sydney Sixers stole the show. With contributions from almost everyone throughout the batting lineup, the Strikers posted a decent total of 176 runs on the board. Jonathan Wells was the pick of their batsmen as he scored 40 off 28 deliveries.
While their batting finished their innings with the flourish, their bowlers failed to sustain the momentum. The Sixers were allowed to put up solid partnerships that never allowed Strikers a chance in the match. The likes of Rashid Khan, Billy Stanlake, and Rashid Khan bowled well, but Michael Neser proved to be the weak point as he gave away 48 runs off his four overs.
All in all, the Strikers still appear to be a pretty solid unit with experience available in all the departments of the game. They have a batting lineup that goes deep along with a versatile bowling attack and beating them is going to take some work for the high-flying Sixers as well.
Philip Salt, Jake Weatherald, Alex Carey, JW Wells, Matthew Short, Michael Neser, Cameron Valente, Rashid Khan, Peter Siddle, Billy Stanlake, Harry Conway.
Sydney Sixers have been one of the best teams in the tournament so far and their top of the table position reflects that. They are jointly placed at the top with Melbourne Stars, separated only on net run-rate. They have won five matches from a total of seven and have a decent net run-rate of 0.219 to go with it.
The Sixers have been brilliant in almost all of their recent matches and are coming into this match on the back of a four-match winning streak. Following a phenomenal show by Moises Henriques in the Sydney Derby, the Sixers picked themselves up to hand Renegades a thumping win and then defeated Adelaide Strikers in a high-scoring encounter.
Against the Strikers, their batsmen did the job to perfection as they chased down the total of 176 with remarkable ease. While they were never ahead in the game, the presence of wickets in their hand ensured that they were always within reach. Josh Phillipe once again proved to be the difference as he played a blinder of an innings to guide Sixers home. He smashed 83 off just 56 deliveries. He was ably supported by the likes of Justin Avendano and Daniel Hughes as they played brilliant second-fiddle roles of Phillipe.
In the beginning of the tournament, the Sixers appear to be a little too over-reliant on Josh Phillipe. While a lot still depends on the performance of Phillipe, they have other players back in form and all of those can be dangerous to deal with on their day. Considering the balance and the form they are in, facing Sydney Sixers would certainly be a big challenge.
Josh Philippe, J Avendano, Daniel Hughes, J Vince, Tom Curran, Jordan Silk, Jack Edwards, B Dwarshuis, JM Bird, Lloyd Pope, JR Hazlewood.

It's a long tournament and not often do we see two teams taking on each other in consecutive encounters. The previous match between the two teams went down till the last over and we expect nothing different this time around as well. On the basis of form, Sydney Sixers have been the better side between the two and their position on the points table reflects that. However, Adelaide Strikers are playing at home and that could be considerable advantage. The surface at Adelaide is likely to assist their solid spin attack and with a decent batting lineup, the Strikers are our pick to emerge on top in the upcoming contest.
