The Big Bash League is proving to be closer than ever and just two points separate teams from 2nd to 7th place on the BBL 08 League Table right now. This means that one or two wins can transform the fortunes of any side and there is very little to choose between the BBL teams.
In this BBL 08 match, we have the Adelaide Strikers taking on Sydney Thunder. Both the Strikers and Thunder were beaten in their last outing. The Adelaide Strikers have won just one match from its three played so far while Sydney Thunder has two wins from three.
Now, with the competition heating up, the Adelaide Strikers would want to start to get into some winning form. They will need to be at their best against Sydney Thunder, that’s for certain.
The Adelaide Strikers were defeated comprehensively by the Perth Scorchers on a quick Perth Stadium wicket in the last match. They were up against a high-quality pace attack and their batting just could not rise to the occasion.
In this match against Sydney Thunder, the Adelaide Strikers will have to face a lot of spin. That is something that is going to test the likes of Jake Weatherald, Colin Ingram, and Matthew Short. They are not the most comfortable against spin and will have to find ways of getting around that problem.
It does not help that neither of these batsmen has made any notable contribution with the bat in the BBL so far either.
This means that Alex Carey is going to be under tremendous pressure when he comes out to bat in the next match. He uses the sweep and the cut very well against the spinners to make them change their lengths. If he can get past the first over or so of the inning then he could be the top scorer for the Adelaide Strikers once again.
We also think Jono Wells is an interesting pick to be the top scorer in this match. He is another player that is not afraid to take the game to the spinners and could find himself at the crease early if the top order keeps performing as it has.
The Adelaide Strikers have a magnificent bowling attack as well. Players like Rashid Khan, Ben Laughlin, and Billy Stanlake make the Strikers a threat in any condition. Rashid Khan bowled his four overs for just nine runs in the last match and even though the Scorchers had time to be able to do that, it just shows the kind of respect he commands.
Sydney Thunder will also have no choice but to circumspect against him and attack the others, possibly giving them wicket-taking opportunities. We think Ben Laughlin is a good person to back as best bowler for Adelaide Strikers in this match.
Alex Carey, Jake Weatherald, Colin Ingram, Matthew Short, JW Wells, Jake Lehmann, Michael Neser, Peter Siddle, Rashid Khan, Ben Laughlin, Billy Stanlake.
Sydney Thunder lost a very close game against the Hobart Hurricanes in their last match. Their batting came to the fore as Jos Buttler scored 89 to lead his side to 193. There are certain things that the scorecard does not tell you.
Shane Watson’s 20 of 14 balls was almost all edges and he was beaten by pace on more than one occasion. Jos Buttler received many chances, a couple of which can be considered easy at that level of cricket.
Callum Ferguson actually appeared to be very much at ease although he perished playing a completely unnecessary shot and Joe Root is still struggling to find his role in the middle order.
The Sydney Thunder batting unit has been garnering praise, as it should, but it is currently all about one man, Jos Buttler. We are not sure of the side has enough in its lineup to be able to recover from the early loss of its openers.
Callum Ferguson and Joe Root need to step up and really take charge in the upcoming matches or Sydney Thunder is going to struggle for consistency. For the moment, they just have to hope that one of their openers has another super night against the Adelaide Strikers. The battle between Buttler and Rashid Khan is going to be very good to watch.
There are three spinners in the Sydney Thunder lineup, like previous seasons, in Green, Cook, and Fawad Ahmed. All three of them are pretty different, although, we don’t rate Cook quite as highly as others. Fawad Ahmed is going to be the player that is going to give the Adelaide Strikers batting the most trouble.
Sams had a horror night in the last match but back him to bounce back strongly. Sydney Thunder keeps on changing the other pace bowler in the side. Rainbird was tried in the last and did pretty okay so we think they should stick with him for some time.
Sydney Thunder is a good side and has started BBL 08 quite well. They just need to sort their middle order out and we think they could be one of the strongest teams in the competition.
Jos Buttler, SR Watson, Callum Ferguson, JE Root, Jason Sangha, Daniel Sams, Arjun Nair, Christopher Green, Sam Rainbird, Jonathan Cook, Fawad Ahmed.
The side winning the toss is likely to want to field first

The BBL 08 match between the Adelaide Strikers and Sydney Thunder is going to be played at the Adelaide Oval, Adelaide. The weather forecast for match day is excellent with next to no rain predicted. The Adelaide Oval is a wonderful batting pitch for the limited overs format. The ball comes on to the bat nicely, there is some help in it for the spinners, but on the whole, it should be a high scoring contest.
Sydney Thunder has been playing some good cricket and the Adelaide Strikers batting has struggled. Home advantage is on the side of the Strikers, though, who also have a very good bowling attack. We think the home team should be able to win this one.
Back the Adelaide Strikers to win.
