We are getting closer to the business end of the Women's Big Bash League and the qualification scenarios are beginning to clear up. Sydney Sixers have maintained their supremacy right through the tournament and are currently at the top of the table. They'll face Adelaide Strikers in their next game which is to be played at Adelaide Oval on 31st December. The Strikers haven't had a great tournament thus far and need to win all of their remaining matches to qualify for the knockouts. Both teams will love to bid goodbye to this year in style and we expect them both to come out all guns blazing.
Adelaide Strikers are languishing at the second spot from the bottom of the points table and the picture in front of them is pretty clear. Adelaide Strikers need to win all of their remaining matches to have a realistic chance to qualify for the playoffs. Considering their run so far in the tournament, it certainly is improbable, but similar things have been done by cricket teams across the globe and the Strikers will draw inspiration from them.
Their last match, which too was against Sydney Sixers, perfectly summed up the story of their tournament. They were outplayed by Sixers in all departments and ended up losing the match by a whopping margin of 74 runs after winning the toss and deciding to field first.
Other than winning the toss, nothing went right for the Strikers women as their bowlers failed to exert any kind of pressure on the Sixers' batters. Barring Megan Schutt, who happened to be the only effective bowler from their attack, no one conceded at an economy rate of below 9.50.
Although it was a perfect day for batting, chasing in excess of 200 is never easy and Strikers faltered in the third over of their innings as Sophie Devine was dismissed for a personal score of 5. Suzie Bates fought hard with her 46-run knock, but no support from any of the other batswomen saw Strikers dismissed for just 132 with five balls to spare.
Suzie Bates, Sophie Devine, T McGrath, T Saville, Amanda Wellington, B Patterson, T McPharlin, Megan Schutt, S Coyte, Danielle Hazell, K Pope.
Alyssa Healy and Elysse Perry continued to build on their brilliant form as the duo stitched together a partnership of 150 in their last encounter, against Strikers. Ashleigh Gardner's timely knock of 39 from just 15 deliveries meant that Strikers needed to chase at least 15 runs more than what was being projected when Perry was dismissed.
Alyssa Healy was instrumental in taking Sixers to a total of 206 as she smashed an unbeaten century. She scored 112 off just 69 deliveries which included 17 fours and 2 towering sixes.
Although their bowlers had the cushion of defending a tall total, they still needed to bowl well and they didn't disappoint. Right from the beginning and till the very end, almost everyone kept things tight or picked wickets which never allowed the Strikers to get the momentum they needed to even get near to the target. Lauren Cheatle was the pick of their bowlers and she returned with the figures of 4-0-22-3.
Alyssa Healy, Ellyse Perry, Ashleigh Gardner, Erin Burns, Sara McGlashan, Dane van Niekerk, Marizanne Kapp, Lauren Smith, Sarah Aley, Hayley Silver-Holmes, Lauren Cheatle.
The Sixers have done tremendously well in the tournament so far and with their previous win against the Strikers, they are only a win away from cementing their place in the playoffs. They'll be fancying that in the upcoming game and it's not going to be easy for the Strikers to stop them. The Strikers, on the other hand, are struggling to stay afloat in the tournament and they need to win all of their games in order have a realistic chance to qualify. The Sixers are in terrific form and they will carry the momentum and confidence of their previous win into the upcoming contest. The Sixers are favorites to win the upcoming contest and reserve a place in the knockouts.
