Ireland is about to start its series against Afghanistan to be played in India and this T20 assignment holds more importance than most others in the past. The T20 World Cup is fast approaching and Ireland would like to get its act together in the format.
A few encouraging results in the recent past suggest that Ireland may be close to cracking the T20 code. They have never won a bilateral T20 series against Afghanistan and this is why the challenge ahead is not going to be easy.
Afghanistan has had its share of trouble in the ODI format but the T20 format is where it shines. A number of Afghan players now play in T20 leagues around the world and are very experienced at handling pressure at the top level.
Can Ireland challenge Afghanistan’s dominance at home or will the Afghans run away with this series as well?
Afghanistan vs Ireland 1st T20 is going to be played at the Greater Noida Sports Complex Ground, Greater Noida on the 6th of March 2020.
Asghar Afghan is back at the helm of Afghanistan cricket after some inner turmoil regarding the leadership. We think this is a good idea because it frees up Rashid Khan to do his best on the field without being burdened by any other thoughts.
Afghanistan is a formidable side in T20 cricket and no one is going to take it lightly. In fact, it would not be too much to count Afghanistan as one of the established and senior nations in T20 cricket now.
The squad has been facing a few issues in terms of new talent coming through and we worry that the senior players have become a bit comfortable in their spots. A lot of the faces in the squad are the same from years ago and while this may be good for the accumulated experience in the squad, it does not speak well about the talent coming through.
The batting for Afghanistan is going to be led by Hazratullah Zazai, Asghar Afghan, and Najibullah Zadran. All-rounders like Samiullah Shinwari, Mohammad Nabi, Gulbadin Naib, and Rahmanullah Gurbaz are the other players that will help shore up the batting.
Even Rashid Khan has emerged as a dangerous batsman down the order in the recent edition of the Big Bash.
Batting has been one of the weaker aspects of Afghanistan’s T20 game and it must figure out a way to use its resources effectively.
The bowling is going to be led by the Afghan spinners. There are plenty of world-class options to choose from and we would not be surprised to see at least three of them in the playing eleven. Rashid Khan, Mujeeb ur Rahman, and Qais Ahmed are all very different types of spinners and will pose different questions to the Irish batsmen.
Just one regular fast-bowler and Gulbadin Naib may be enough to round out the bowling attack.
Hazratullah Zazai, N Zadran, Asghar Afghan, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Samiullah Shenwari, Mohammad Nabi, Gulbadin Naib, Karim Janat, Rashid Khan, S Zadran, Mujeeb Ur Rahman.
Ireland has played two completed T20 internationals in 2020 so far, both of them against the West Indies in West Indies. That is not an easy assignment as anyone in world cricket will tell you which is why Ireland’s 1-1 scoreline is nothing to scoff at.
Ireland has reshuffled its T20 lineup and tried to play a more aggressive brand of cricket lately. That has started to show some results and Ireland is no longer the whipping dog of T20 cricket as it once was.
The batting is going to be led by Paul Stirling, Kevin O’Brien, and Andrew Balbirnie as the top-3. This gives Ireland a lot of firepower and the option to try and attack from the very beginning. There is a bit of over-reliance on these three players, though, as the middle-order is not very convincing.
Gareth Delany, Harry Tector, and Gary Wilson are the players that will be responsible for playing responsibly in case some early wickets are lost or clearing the boundaries near the end of the inning.
Much like Afghanistan, the Irish batting does not fill us with too much confidence. In Indian conditions, the Ireland batsmen are also going to tested by quality spinners in conditions that generally favor them.
Simi Singh and George Dockrell are likely to be the spinners that find a place in the playing eleven. Both of them are conventional spinners and could find it tough to tie down the Afghan batsmen.
Young, Little, and McCarthy are the three other bowlers in the squad that are likely to be among the starting eleven for the first T20.
Andy Balbirnie, Gareth Delany, George Dockrell, Joshua Little, Kevin O'Brien, WB Rankin, Simi Singh, PR Stirling, Harry Tector, Lorcan Tucker, CA Young.
The team that wins the toss is going to want to field first to get an idea of the conditions.

There has been a little bit of rain in Greater Noida, although the forecast for match day is not too bad. The pitch is expected to be good for batting with short boundaries that allow the batsmen to hit sixes with ease.
There is always some help for the spinners in this part of the world and that is something we should expect in this match as well.
Dream11 tips and Dream11 prediction for Afghanistan vs Ireland 1st T20 2020
We are going to stick with Afghanistan in this match largely because of their better spinners. The conditions are also more to their liking and the history of dominance is also something that will give the Afghans a lot of confidence going into this match.
Bet on Afghanistan to win.
