Afghanistan versus Ireland is a fascinating contest that we have seen pretty frequently in recent years. The growth of Afghanistan as a cricketing nation has unfortunately mirrored a somewhat decline in Ireland’s and so both the teams are natural cricketing rivals.
On the surface, it may appear that Afghanistan has a better team but the previous two ODI series played between them have been drawn with an equal scoreline. Ireland has once against started to rediscover some white-ball form and is not going to be easy for the Afghans to face up against.
Afghanistan vs Ireland 1st ODI 2021 is going to be played at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi on the 21st of January 2021.
Afghanistan had a disastrous ODI World Cup 2019 and it has tried to take some steps to address that. Asghar Afghan is back as the captain and the players seem to be quite happy to play under his leadership.
The batting is always the concern whenever the Afghanistan team plays. They still do not have a core group of batsmen that can be relied upon to play long innings and get to good totals consistently.
Rahmat Shah, Hashmatullah Shahidi, Asghar Afghan, and Najibullah Zadran are the players that are going to lead this batting lineup. Mohammad Nabi is a huge force in the world of T20 cricket but has not quite been able to master the art of ODI batting.
He tends to bat a bit too low for our liking and is rarely given the opportunity to make the most of his talent.
Over the batting for Afghanistan in the ODI format is often too slow, does not rotate enough singles, and can struggle to up the power quotient at the end.
The bowing, however, is led by Rashid Khan and Mujeeb ur Rahman. Both these bowlers are T20 superstars but the extra time in the 50 over format means that players don’t have to attack them immediately.
The role of Mohammad Nabi, Naveen ul Haq, and Gulbadin Naib is going to be quite important. We also think Yamin Ahmedzai may get a chance to feature in the playing eleven and thus provide one more bowling option.
Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Asghar Afghan, N Zadran, R Shah, Javed Ahmadi, Mohammad Nabi, Gulbadin Naib, Azmatullah Omarzai, Rashid Khan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Naveen-ul-Haq.
Ireland has been in Abu Dhabi playing cricket and so it is going to be very well versed with the conditions ahead of the first match. That is a good sign but the results of their matches against the UAE are a bit troubling.
Ireland actually ended up losing its first match against UAE by 6 wickets before winning the only other one by 112 runs. UAE is a decent team at the associate level but it is not even close to the challenge that Afghanistan is going to pose.
Even in the match they did win, Ireland was 10 for the loss of three wickets with its best three players back in the hut. Players like Paul Stirling, Kevin O’Brien, and Andrew Balbirnie will have to lead from the front against Afghanistan.
Harry Tector and Lorcan Tucker are decent players while Simi Singh seems to be a very capable spin bowling all-rounder as well.
On paper, Ireland has the batting to be able to test Afghanistan’s bowling.
Gareth Delany, Andy McBrine, Barry McCarthy, and Craig Young are the bowlers that are likely to start the series for Ireland. Ireland has improved as an ODI nation from the last time it played against Afghanistan and we think it is going to be a lot tougher to beat.
Lorcan Tucker, PR Stirling, Andy Balbirnie, Kevin O'Brien, Harry Tector, Curtis Campher, Gareth Delany, Simi Singh, Barry McCarthy, Andy McBrine, Craig Young.
The pitch at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium is flat and remains the same. We don’t think winning the toss is a huge advantage. The team that wins may want to bat first, though.

The conditions are going to be good for cricket with only a slight chance of rain being forecast. The pitch is going to be flat and good for batting. The surface has a decent amount of bounce but it does not have too much pace in it. We saw some very large scores being hit here in the IPL and so hopefully another high-scoring match is in store.
We think a score of around 250 should be seen as par considering the batting lineup of both teams.
We think this is a good match in which to back the underdog. Ireland has been playing as a unit at this very venue while Afghanistan is going to be paying its first match after the COVID-19 pandemic hit.
Also, there is not too much to choose between the batting lineups of both teams. The spin-bowling is where Afghanistan takes a lead but Ireland is no stranger to facing these Afghan spinners.
The return is worth the risk.
Bet on Ireland to win.
