Afghanistan and Ireland played out a very exciting first match of their bilateral series. While Afghanistan ended up the winner by 16 runs, Ireland ran it close and could have easily been on the winning side. Some last-minute batting heroics by Rashid Khan ended up being the difference between the two teams.
We don’t think Afghanistan is playing its best ODI cricket just yet. Ireland has also improved its 50-over game and the gap between the two has closed considerably.
Afghanistan vs Ireland, 2nd ODI 2021 is going to be played at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi on the 24th of January 2021.
Rahmanullah Gurbaz started his ODI career with a magnificent century. He showed intent from the very first ball and was able to keep it going till the very end of his inning. He eventually ended up smashing nine sixes.
Unfortunately, none of the other batters was able to make it count in this match. That is the biggest weakness of the Afghanistan team and the batting will be under pressure in this next match as well.
Rahmat Shah, Asghar Afghan, and Mohammad Nabi must make more of a contribution in the middle-order.
Overall, the batting was saved by a debutant in the previous match and that must be taken into consideration while placing your bets.
We know Afganistan’s bowling is stronger than Ireland and that proved to be the case once more. Naveen ul Haq picked up three wickets, Rashid Khan and Mujeeb picked up two each, and the other bowlers contributed effectively as well.
Still, we do believe that Ireland is better equipped to face the Afghan bowling than before and this advantage is not as exaggerated as it used to be.

A poor start with the bat and a lack of contribution from the top-3 resulted in a loss for Ireland in the previous match. There were several occasions where Ireland could have shut out Afghanistan from the previous match.
They had Afghanistan at 208 for 7 but let them get to 287. Similarly at 174 for 4 in their own inning, Ireland had the chance to seal the run-chase as well.
This lack of a killer instinct is a bit troubling but we do see some moves in the right direction for the Irish team. Hey showed the ability to make a big score without any of their top-3 scoring runs and were able to counter the Afghan bowling attack pretty well.
They just need their big names to fire now.
Ireland’s bowling was pretty ordinary. Andy McBrine picked up five wickets and was very good but the rest were disappointing. Simi Singh was not able to have the impact expected and the new-ball bowlers kept giving away too many freebies.
There were tight overs but the pressure was not sustained for any significant period of time.

The team that wins the toss is going to want to bat first. The surface at Abu Dhabi was looking a bit tired and could be a tad bit slower in this match. That would make chasing even more difficult than in the previous match.

The conditions in Abu Dhabi remain more or less the same even though a lot of cricket is played there. It is quite remarkable how the groundsmen are able to achieve that sort of consistency. This is why we are expecting another god batting surface that is a bit on the slower side. The spinners will have a role to play but the batsmen should be able to get enough runs needed.
We don’t think there is much of a difference between these two teams at the moment, however, Ireland may have lost its best chance to get a win. The Afghan batsmen are going to come out better-prepared and less rusty in this match. The surface could also favor the Afghanistan team more.
Bet on Afghanistan to win.
