AFG vs SL Match Prediction - Nov 01, 2022

Afghanistan has had two matches rained-out in the Super-12 stage and it does not really look likely to qualify for the semi-finals. Sri Lanka has lost two out of the three matches it has played in the Super-12 stage and is currently last in the Group 1 standings.

Neither side has a realistic chance of making the semis but would like to finish in the top 4 of their group as that ensures a direct entry into the next T20 World Cup.

AFG vs SL Team Previews

Afghanistan

Afghanistan has played just one match so far. That was against England in Perth where the Afghans really struggled. Brisbane is another ground where a lot of bounce is seen but the big boundaries also bring their spinners into play. Plus, Afghanistan is up against Sri Lanka, a team that does not have the most fearsome fast bowlers.

There have been three T20 international matches played between Afghanistan and Sri Lanka in the past. Two of them have been won by Sri Lanka and one (in the recently concluded Asia Cup) has been won by Afghanistan. Afghanistan is pretty similar to Sri Lanka as a team. It also relies very highly on its spinners and has a couple of decent fast bowlers.

The big test is going to be in the performance of the batting lineup.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz is the only batter that has some T20 pedigree and Ibrahim Zadran seems to be the best equipped to deal with the extra bounce. The rest of the batting will need to perform better than what it has done so far to have a chance.

Afghanistan Playing 11

Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Gulbadin Naib, Ibrahim Zadran, Usman Ghani, Najibullah Zadran, Mohammad Nabi, Azmatullah Omarzai, Rashid Khan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Fareed Ahmad Malik, Fazalhaq Farooqi.

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka was impressive in Round 1 of the T20 World Cup 2022 but the Super-12 stage has not gone to plan. It has had some good moments against both Australia and New Zealand but it eventually ended up suffering heavy defeats.

The spinners, particularly Hasaranga, have not been very effective and the fielding has also been quite poor. That leaves the batters to try and win matches for their team but once again, the absence of runs from Pathum Nissanka in crucial matches is hurting them.

On paper, Sri Lanka has a deeper and stronger batting lineup than Afghanistan but the performances have not really reflected that. Players like Dasun Shanaka, Kusal Mendia, and Dhananjaya de Silva have all been inconsistent. The lower-order players, like Chamika Karunaratne, that have been good at getting crucial runs down the order are also finding it hard to contribute.

This makes Sri Lanka more beatable than before and we are not sure paying a premium for them in this contest makes much sense from a betting point of view.

Sri Lanka Playing 11

Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis, Dhananjaya de Silva, Charith Asalanka, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Dasun Shanaka, Wanidu Hasaranga, Maheesh Theekshana, Kasun Rajitha, Lahiru Kumara, Pramod Madushan.

AFG vs SL Toss Prediction

The team that wins the toss is likely to want to bat first. That has been by far the better choice in this edition of the T20 World Cup so far.

Pitch and Conditions

The conditions in Brisbane are unfortunately quite wet. The forecast clears up around the time that the match is scheduled to start so we could have some play but delays are likely. The pitch at the Gabba has been good for batting with a nice amount of bounce on offer. The outfield is already large and the rain could make it slow as well. This means the par score will be lower than expected.

We think something around 140 could be competitive.

AFG vs SL Betting Tips

We are going to back Afghanistan in this match. Sri Lanka has shorter odds, as it is the favorite, but we don't think it is necessarily that much better than Afghanistan. Both teams have some good spinners but the pace at which Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi bowl, makes Afghnistan's attack more dangerous.

We think it is worth the risk to back Afghanistan.

Bet on Afghanistan to win.

Ibrahim Zadran plays the short ball well. He is also quite composed against spin and has a decent record against Sri Lanka. We think he could be the batter that Afghanistan's batting revolves around.
