About the Match
World T20 carnival is about to take off tomorrow as Zimbabwe takes on Hong Kong in the inaugural match going to happen in Nagpur. In the another game on the same day, Afghanistan will lock horns with Scotland at the same venue. Both the teams haven't tasted much success in all he editions of World T20 combined. Afghanistan has appeared in three editions of World T20 and has emerged on the right side in one match out of seven matches played. Scotland, on the other hand, has played in four games and is still untouched by the joy of victory. The weather is expected to be bright and sunny albeit a little windy assisting swing bowlers. Both the teams would like to start on a winning note here and it is likely to be an interesting clash.
Afghanistan is a relatively new team in international cricket, but has taken long strides in making name for itself and has earned a decent number of followers in quick time. They did not have good time in Asia Cup qualifiers despite being favorites in the pack. Their, they lost to UAE in a close contest. Having said that, it is a team that cannot be taken lightly. Led by veteran Asghar Stanikzai, their batting rests on the experienced shoulders of Samiullah Shewari and Mohammad Shehzad. Shapoor Zadran and Dawlat Zadran will handle the proceeds as far as bowling is concerned.
However, since the last World T20, Afghanistan has been one of the better sides. In 16 T20 games, they've won 13 games topping the charts in all aspects; be it Win/Loss ratio or total number of wins. The recent past has been a surging period for the Afghans and they'll draw confidence as well as inspiration from it. The recent loss in Asia Cup will still be in their mind and they would have to come out strongly to challenge the Scots.
Scotland is one of the most experienced T20 associate sides and it doesn't really reflect from their performance. Skipper Preston Mommsen, is vastly experienced and the guys like Kyle Coetzer and Davey Jacobs makes Scotland a very dangerous side as evident from their 2015 World Cup campaign where they gave Bangladesh and New Zealand a good scare.
Since 2014, in T20s, they've had a reasonable time, although not as good as the Afghans. Out of 12 games, they managed to secure victories 6 times and twice the match finished without a result. Scotland is playing the T20 World Cup after a long gap of seven years and they'll have a point to prove. They have the players who can give any team a run for their money, let alone Afghans. If they play out of their skins and players perform as per their ability, they definitely stand a good chance to take down their opponents.
A win in this match will be crucial for the both the sides to kick-start their campaign to qualify for the super ten round in the World T20. T20 is just the kind of format where anything can happen, but given the facts and performances of the recent past, the men from Afghanistan are firm favorites to win this all-important match
