About the Match
Antigua Hawksbills will play Guyana Amazon Warriors at North Sound-Antigua on Aug 18 in what is a crucial match for the hosts. After a disappointing loss to the Zouks by the D/L method, the Hawksbills need to win their last league match in a big way to make it to the semi-finals. Presently tied at 4 points with St.Lucia Zouks and T&T Red Steel, the Hawksbills are ahead only by a small run-rate margin, which will disappear when Zouks and T&T play each other in a do or die match on the same day. On the other hand, the Amazon Warriors are sitting comfortably at 2nd place with 8 points and will look to dominate the hosts.
Guyana Amazon Warriors:
The Amazon Warriors have come back strongly with convincing wins in the last two matches. Barnwell’s deadly bowling in the last over of the previous match resulted in a close win for the Warriors. Supported by Sunil Naraine’s economical bowling and superb efforts from Santokie, this tight bowling unit continues to excel. The batsmen too have performed consistently, with Simmons & Guptill putting up the 2nd best opening stand for the team in the recent match. Previously, Guptill and Hafeez too built a strong 98-run partnership which was then continued along by Franklin taking the charge. However, Captain Ramnaresh Sarwan needs to step up his game and lead the team from the front.
Being a decider, the Hawksbills will look to battle it out with the Warriors and come out with a strong win. After a superb victory over the Tridents, the team had moved up to 4th position. Led by Cotterrell’s brilliant spell of 4 wickets and supported by Roach and Captain Samuels, who took 2 wickets each at regular intervals, this fierce bowling squad can win matches. However, they have not been supported by their batsmen, who have made it a habit to gift their wickets away. Though Charles and Kieran Powell are classy in their shots, they need to focus and post a huge total that would be easy to defend. Orlando Peters made a quick 31off 22 balls to win the match against Tridents but was denied a chance in the rain-affected match against the Zouks.
Riding high on the wave of victory and charged up by brilliant performances from all quarters, Guyana Amazon Warriors clearly look to be the favorites. If Barnwell’s deadly attack is brought on early in the game unlike previously, the hosts will have to put their best foot forward and give a match winning performance. It will be a tough competition with exemplary bowling performances from both sides. However, the Warriors have heavy-hitters all the way down the batting order and will look to annihilate the Hawksbills. Much needs to be seen how the host team comes up with a strategy to enter the semi-finals. Going with the odds, a win for the Guyana Amazon Warriors against the Antigua Hawksbills is certainly the more likely option.
