AUS vs ENG Match Prediction - Oct 14, 2022

Well, you could say that England only won the first match in the T20 series simply because the Australians were resting their frontline bowlers. But after this latest convincing victory in the second match? It’s not luck, but talent that gets the job done.

The Aussies were out of excuses when they couldn’t quite reach England’s total of 178, falling short by eight runs. Australia did make a contest out of it by the end, but it was too little, too late.

Hats must go off to England after wrapping up the best-of-three series against the Aussies, 2-0.

AUS vs ENG Team Previews

Australia

So, what went wrong for Australia?

The squad’s return of their star bowlers wasn’t much help. Mitchell Starc was continually smashed around the ground and came away with a woeful Economy Rate of 10.50. Starc did pick up a wicket, but it cost the team 42 runs.

Josh Hazlewood was perhaps the biggest issue during the game, as his ER of 9.75 was as useful as a hammer made out of glass. He finished his four overs with 0/39 and gave the English batters too many easy looks at the boundary.

It was surprising to see Steve Smith still left out of the T20 series against England, as the team could have used his poise and experience. However, the decision might be to rest Smith for the World Cup and give more real-game practice to the likes of Marsh, David, and Stoinis.

Australia’s opening batters chose a bad time to have some of the lowest scores of the year, as Warner was dismissed for just four runs, and captain Finch left for only 13 runs. When the squad gets off to such a poor start, it puts pressure on the middle and lower-order batters.

Luckily, Australia had surprise assistance from Mitchell Marsh with his 45 runs from 29 balls. Marsh has been a massive boon to the Aussie squad at a time when the team needs fresh blood, as Warner, Smith, and Finch all have heavy years on them.

Likewise, Tim David did make a valiant push for the win and he’s finding his form at the right time. Although his 40 runs from 23 balls put Australia within striking distance, he was cleverly bowled by England’s Sam Curran.

England

It takes a lot of effort for an Aussie to tip their hat toward England for a good win, but it must be done today.

England was just superb in its demolition of old foe Australia. But credit where credit’s due, as this win belongs to Dawid Malan.

England’s opening batsman scored a massive 82 runs from 49 deliveries (7 fours and 4 sixes) and defiantly showed why his inclusion into the English squad is a lock.

Malan has been solidly impressive during his T20 career, picking up a total of 1,669 runs in 50 matches with an average of 39.73. Although he fell short of his highest score of 103*, his 82 runs put England firmly in the best position to win from the beginning.

Australia had a glimmer of hope when Stokes and Brook were dispatched for eight runs overall, but Mooen was the savour of the team when he added his 44 runs from 27 balls. This made England’s total far more respectable and was in the end too much for Australia.

On the bowling side, the best performance had to be Sam Curran taking 3/25 and an ER of 6.25 for the match. Curran made any Australia comeback incredibly difficult and was undeniably the X-Factor in the win.

England Playing 11

Jos Buttler, AD Hales, Dawid Malan, Ben Stokes, Harry Brook, Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, David Willey, AU Rashid, Mark Wood, Reece Topley.

AUS vs ENG Toss Prediction

Any team winning the toss should bowl first, as the pitch is better for batsmen later in the match. This is especially true if rain has hit the pitch.

Pitch and Conditions

The weather forecast in Canberra on Friday has shown rain in the morning and it’ll be colder at 14°C, so this could likely make the pitch less bouncy and the outfield slower.

AUS vs ENG Betting Tips

Which way will Australia turn? Fly the white flag and accept that the series is over or fight until the end to get back at least one victory? It’s hard to know, but with the T20 World Cup imminent, one has to think that Australia will rest many of its star players and save the rematch for the tournament.

It’s a good time for David, Marsh, and Cameron Green to get more batting experience, and for Nathan Ellis and Kane Richardson to get into the final XI for some more bowling options later down the line.

Australia will find it hard to lose one more game in the series, but as it’s already complete with England winning 2-0, then there’s little reason to care about the third match. It’s a chance for younger players to get real experience, but otherwise, Oz should focus on the World Cup.

England, on the other hand, will be revelling in the fact that it beat Australia so easily. They will continue to roll out the same squad that had such success and keep building team chemistry before the big T20 tournament.

Bet on England to win.
