AUS vs NZ Match Prediction - Sep 06, 2022

It's been an era since we last saw Australia and New Zealand play each other. Several international players have retired and we have seen many youngsters step up for their respective countries in the said time. After being delayed due to Covid-19 for a good couple of years, the rivalry between Australia and New Zealand is all set to resume.

A lot has changed for both sides since they last played each other. It were, in fact, Australia and New Zealand playing each other before the world was shut down due to the pandemic. Coming off exceptional form into the series, both sides will be raring to go and seize the initiative with a win here.

AUS vs NZ Team Previews

Australia

For Australia, the major talking point will be their batting unit and the form of their skipper Aaron Finch. Just when Australia looked on on their way to coast to a 3-0 victory over Zimbabwe, they stumbled and lost the third match quite comprehensively. While the match was inconsequential, they would have been gutted to lose that match.

Bowling did an excellent job right throughout the series for them. The bowlers were excellent in the first match as they restricted Zimbabwe to a paltry total. It was a similar case in the second match as well with Australia needing to chase a subpar total. It all turned around when Australia were put in to bat. They never looked prepared to pace their innings and were restricted to a total of 141. The bowlers did well to make a fight out of it, but the total was too little to cause much trouble.

All eyes will be on Aaron Finch, who has perhaps been the only man in the Aussie batting lineup who has looked out of touch. While his role and place in the side is pretty much fixed for the World T20 - Australia, the same cannot be said for the fifty-over World Cup. Other than him, most of their batsmen have done pretty well in recent times and should be looking to make a mark here.

Their bowling certainly is more experienced and more equipped, at least on paper. The likes of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Adam Zampa are second to none in their respective trades. Glenn Maxwell, Cameron Green, and Mitch Marsh did an exceptional job each to play the role of the fourth and fifth bowler. All in all, Australia have a decent unit on paper and that coupled with the home advantage makes them a difficult side to beat. Having said that, they have blown hot and cold with respect to the execution and will want to get that right here. If they are able to do so here, getting past them could prove to be an incredibly difficult task.

New Zealand

Even though New Zealand are a full-member nation and have always been one of the best sides in the ICC events in recent times, they do not really get as many matches as some of the other sides do. They are coming off a splendid European tour in recent times and will be raring to go against a full-strength Aussie side here.

New Zealand too are coming into this match with a full-strength side, which is something we haven't seen them do for quite some time. While they appear to be having quite a young side from the outset, most of their players have plenty of experience of playing across the globe in various league.

With the likes of Martin Guptill, Kane Williamson, and Daryl Mitchell available, they do appear to be a formidable unit. Also, with Tim Southee available to bat at nine, they have a batting lineup that goes deep and can afford to all guns blazing right from the outset. They have a good bowling unit too with six bowling options available. However, the absence of a genuine leg-spinner might hurt them at this venue.

All in all, New Zealand have a decent enough side and it will all depend on how they adapt to the conditions. A lot will depend on how their hard-hitters in Glenn Phillips and Jimmy Neesham do down the order. If they are able to get things going, Australia will have their work cut out.

AUS vs NZ Toss Prediction

All three matches at Townsville were won by the team chasing and both captains would know that. Also, there are a lot of unknowns about the surface at the moment and no team would want to test the surface by batting first. Considering that and the fact that the surface is unlikely to change down much over the course of the match, if anything it will get better to bat on, we expect the captain winning the toss to field first.

Pitch and Conditions

This is not a regular venue for international matches to be hosted and there will be a lot of unknown until we see the first innings played out. The fact that this is a day-night game does remove the early morning advantage that the bowlers have that batsmen should relish batting at what would arguably be the best time to bat. Having said that, there's been showers around here in the last few days and we might see the surface to be a little damp early on in the innings. Considering that and what we have seen in Australia in recent times, a total of around 270 would be just about par.

AUS vs NZ Betting Tips

With both sides coming into this match with a full-strength side named, it certainly has the makings of a hard-fought series. Both these sides will be itching to grab the initiative with a win here and it is certainly not going to be easy, for either side. While the Aussies have the home advantage, their form with the bat hasn't been as good as they would have wanted to. New Zealand, on the other hand, have rarely played with their full-strength squad and it will be interesting to see how they do here. Keeping all factors into consideration and the odds on offer, we will be placing our money on a New Zealand win and so should you.

Kane Williamson looked out of sorts right after he made his way back from injury but has certainly looked like coming back to form in recent matches. He was decent against the Windies and would want to better that in a lot more familiar conditions. Given the role he has in the team, he is likely to have plenty of time to get set. Keeping that into consideration, he seems to be all set for a personal score of at least fifty here.

While David Warner has been in terrific form of late, the same cannot be said for Aaron Finch. Australia, recently, has been guilty of having poor opening partnerships and that was the case against Zimbabwe as well. New Zealand, on the other hand, have done better right at the top. We expect that to continue here in this one too and a bet on New Zealand to have better opening partnerships seems to be a pretty safe yet lucrative option.
