About the Match
After a spellbinding Aussie victory against England in the 2nd ODI by 1 wicket, the crowds at the Gabba stadium went berserk and jumped in joy like never before. Australia leads the series 2-0 with this emphatic win that left England shocked with disbelief as they were so close to winning the game but were denied a victory in the end. While the Aussies will be thrilled for the upcoming match, England will have to pull itself up and face the challenges head-on to redeem themselves here. Today’s match was entertaining by all means and the audience will be at the edge of their seats at Sydney to witness another great performance by both sides.
With 57 runs required from 36 balls and 1 wicket in hand, Faulkner kept his cool to smash away sixes and fours to win the match for his team with 3 balls to spare. Along with McKay at the other end, Faulkner posted a 57-run partnership and scored the winning runs; he scored 69 runs from 47 balls that comprised of 5 sixes and 3 fours to finish off with a brilliant win that left his team-mates and countrymen ecstatic. Faced with a target of 301 runs, the Aussies struggled and were not at the best of their game; though Marsh and Bailey posted a 44-run stand for the 4th wicket and later Brad Haddin and Maxwell posted an 80-run partnership for the 6th wicket, they were in totters at 244-9. Earlier, the bowlers had a tough time against the English as they couldn’t stop the run flow; though Coulter-Nile, Maxwell and Faulkner took 2 wickets each, they had no answer for Morgan who kept the scoreboard ticking. Faulkner’s determination took the team safely home and they will come back stronger in the upcoming games.
It was a shocking defeat today as the team lost the match by 1 wicket; they sensed their first victory of the tour here but it was snatched away by Faulkner’s outburst. The batsmen delivered this time; Ian Bell and Cook posted a 57-run opening partnership, which was further strengthened Morgan. While Bell posted 68 runs off 84 balls, Morgan scored 106 runs off 99 deliveries that saw him smash away 6 sixes and 4 fours. Buttler contributed with 49 runs and along with Morgan posted 117-run partnership for the 6th wicket and England looked confident for the first time in this tour. The bowlers had to defend a total of 300 runs and got off to an encouraging start as Jordan took 2 quick wickets early on; Root and Bresnan took 2 wickets each to get the Aussies in trouble. Rankin, Stokes and Bopara chipped in with a wicket each to demolish the Aussie batting line-up but they were unprepared for Faulkner’s heroics in the end. The players need to draw positives from this match and fight harder in the upcoming match.
England sniffed victory but lost the match in a disappointing end; they will come back with a stronger resolve in the 3rd ODI and will definitely give a tough fight here. The Aussies received a major morale boost with today’s win; however, England too had a chance and would love to convert those sort of chances into results. With batsmen coming back into some sort of form coupled with good return rates, I’d place my money on Australia in this game.
