About the Match
After winning the Ashes series 3-0 and leveling the T20Is, England is ready to take on Australia in the first of the 5-match ODI series on September 6th at Leeds. England managed a narrow win against Ireland yesterday in the only ODI match of their tour by 6 wickets. On the other hand, Australia won its lone one-day match against Scotland by a huge margin of 200 runs. It was a sheer display of talent by the Aussies as they go into this ODI series with more confidence. The English are not far behind and will definitely come back with some terrific performances against the visitors.
It took a Captain’s knock from Eoin Morgan and a brilliant support by Ravi Bopara to win the match against Ireland yesterday. At one stage it looked as if the English were about to suffer their most humiliating loss in recent history. However, Morgan with his classy 124 and Bopara with an unbeaten 101 runs stuck in their feet and made it home. Boyd Rankin was an absolute delight early on as he struck with 2 wickets at the very beginning and later with 2 more. James Tredwell contributed with the wickets of Niall O’Brien and Wilson. Rankin displayed his superb form when he came back again to remove the dangerous Porterfield and restricted them to a defendable 269. Where the bowlers excelled, the batsmen lacked and faltered at the very beginning of the chase. However, the heroics of Morgan and Bopara took them to victory. England needs to be better prepared when they face Australia on Sep 6.
After a thumping victory by 200 runs against Scotland, the team is riding high with self-esteem. Aaron Finch once again showed his mastery with the bat with an excellent and mesmerizing 148 off 116 balls. Shaun Marsh was a step ahead with 151 runs and the two youngsters helped put up a massive target of 362, which was too much for Scotland to handle. The bowlers had a good run too, with Johnson’s 4-36 doing the maximum damage. Faulkner provided regular breakthroughs with his 2 wickets and Fawad Ahmed struck with the crucial wicket of MacLeod, making it impossible for the opponents to recover. This win has brought back the Aussies to a pumped up spirit that we saw after the 1st T20 win against England. They need to focus again and continue with their brilliant show in the 1st ODI against the hosts.
Both teams are well placed and are backed up by great individual performances. England has done well so far, barring some of the gaps in the battling line-up and a lack of quality fast bowlers. Meanwhile, Australia has gained strength to strength in this tournament and is looking stronger with every match. Which team will emerge victorious? The opponents are equally matched. However, Australia will use their experience once again to their advantage and win against the younger English team.
Australia, 1.73 @ William Hill
Australian opener pair didn’t perform that well in Test series, but has looked phenomenal in shorter version of the game. Aaron Finch smashed highest T20 score in no time and Marsh played fabulously against Scotland. David Warner too looks in promising form. With their openers looking in supreme form, it will be hard to dismiss them cheaply. I think that Aussie opening pair will easily surpass the score of 26-runs.
