Women's World Cup started with a bang as India Women defeated Australia Women in a closely contested encounter. The win for India not only made the group interesting, but also allowed an opportunity for other teams in the group to qualify for the playoffs. The situation in Group A as of now is pretty tight. Sri Lanka pushed New Zealand hard before New Zealand finally got home. It is not too different in Group B either. England Women lost their first match to South African women and that could be considered an upset as well. With so many unanticipated things happening around in the tournament, the importance of upcoming Group A match, which is to be played between Australia Women and Sri Lanka Women, is of significant importance. It is to be played on 24th February at W.A.C.A Cricket Ground, Perth.
Australia Women came into the tournament as the powerhouse in Women's cricket, but their loss against the Indian team protrayed that they, too, are not invincible. They showed quiet a lot of vulnerabilites and with not many matches to play for them, they would want to reassert their dominance.
Bowling first on a slowish surface against India, Australia's bowlers were brilliant. They never allowed India batsmen to get going and restricted them to a manageable total of 132. It was an easy total to chase, but reckless batting by them despite being in a good position coupled with some excellent batting by Indians saw them lose the match by 18 runs.

The tournament so far has turned out to be a lot closer than expected and it was no different for Sri Lanka when they faced New Zealand in their opening encounter. Although they lost their match, they stretched New Zealand had and at one time looked like the favorites to emerge on top.
Batting first on a decent surface, Sri Lanka got off to a flying start with Chamari Atapatthu leading the charge. However, they soon slipped from a good position to a terrible position as they lost wicket in chunks thereafter. Defending a small total, they started off pretty well by picking up Rachel Haynes and Suzie Bates early. However, it was their fielding that robbed them the game. They allowed two chances to Sophie Devine, who single-handedly took the game away from the Sri Lankans with a terrifc fifty.

On paper, Australia are clearly a better side. However, these are early days in the tournament so far and we have already seen the unexpected happen. Sri Lanka pushed New Zealand hard and defeated England in the warm-ups. Considering that, the Aussies will not be taking them lightly. Having said that, Australia's recent performance apart from their performance against India has been good. They are a better side on paper, and are, therefore, our pick to emerge on top in the upcoming encounter.
