BAN vs AFG Match Prediction - Aug 30, 2022

Even though the focus in the Asia Cup 2022 will pretty much be on India vs Pakistan fixtures, there are several other rivalries brewing up nicely. We saw Afghanistan get the better of Sri Lanka in the opening game of the tournament, well and truly announcing their candidature for the next round.

There's another rivalry in this tournament that the fans will be following pretty closely. Afghanistan and Bangladesh have produced exciting cricket in recent times and they both would be desperate to prove their supremacy over each other in the shortest format.

Up next in the tournament, Afghanistan are all set to meet Bangladesh in an important Group B game that might well govern the teams that make it to the next round. Both sides would want to win this one and a cracker of a contest is certainly on the cards. The match is to be played on 30th August 2022 at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, Sharjah.

BAN vs AFG Team Previews

Bangladesh

Bangladesh have endured plenty of changes in the last few years, be it their team or the leadership. In this tournament as well, they will be under the leadership of Shakib al Hasan, who will be donning the captain's hat after three good years. Bangladesh have seen their T20 stocks dip significantly in the recent past and this tournament will be a massive chance for the Tigers to redeem themselves.

Agressive approach once used to be the hallmark of Bangladesh's T20I game but we have seen that missing ever since Mashrafe Mortaza left the charge. Bangladesh have had a horrific run in the recent times, having lost both white-ball series to Zimbabwe a few days ago.

Bangladesh do get a big boost with Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, and Mohammad Saifuddin returning but hitting the ground running is always a difficult ask. Apart from them though and Mahmudullah, Bangladesh lack big match experience with the bat. With the ball, however, Bangladesh look a pretty good unit with Mustafizru Rahman and Mahedi Hasan being seasoned T20 campaigners. Add to them the all-round skills of Shakib Al Hasan, making their bowling attack a tough one to deal with.

All in all, Bangladesh have a decent side on paper but the voids are well and truly apparent too. They are coming off a poor run and will need to get their act together, quick. If they are able to play to their potential here, they will present a tough challenge to high-flying Afghanistan.

Bangladesh Playing 11

Mohammad Naim Sheikh, Anamul Haque, Shakib Al Hasan, Afif Hossain, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mosaddek Hossain, Mahmudullah, Mahedi Hasan, Mohammad Saifuddin, Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman.

Afghanistan

Afghanistan were certainly not the favorites to get to the next round but with a massive win over Sri Lanka in the opening match, they certainly are now. In terms of the number of balls remaining, they scored their second largest win ever and would be raring to go in the second match. While they did win the toss, it was their skill with the ball that actually set the game up for them.

Fazal Haq Farooqui and Naveen Ul Haq were absolutely unplayable in the first four overs as they got rid of key Sri Lankan batsmen. With the kind of spin attack that Afghanistan has, Sri Lanka could never really get going and were eventually restricted for a subpar total.

Chasing the total, Afghanistan ensured that they get their net run-rate nice and up too as that can become a critical factor in determining the teams that progress through to the next round. Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Hazratullah Zazai were both at their destructive best as Afghanistan sealed the deal with plenty of overs to spare.

Afghanistan didn't come into the Asia Cup on the back of a good run and this win over Sri Lanka should imbibe their side with a lot of confidence. Their team looked excellent on the field with pretty much all bases covered. While they bat deep with the likes of Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman pretty capable, their middle-order does look a bit fragile. A lot will depend on how their bowling does in the upcoming match as well. If they are able to play to their potential on the whole, they would be a very difficult side to get past.

Afghanistan Playing 11

BAN vs AFG Betting Tips

With a spot in the next round pretty much hinging on the result of this match, both sides are expected to come out hard. While Afghanistan are placed comfortably, a win here will seal their spot in the next round. Bangladesh too will want to get off to a winning start. Afghanistan have already played a game and a big win in that one should have settled their nerves. Bangladesh, on the other hand, might be a bit rusty. They haven't had a good time too and that might well reflect on the field. On paper, both sides have their strengths and weaknesses and there isn't a lot to choose between the two. Having said that, dealing with Afghanistan's spin attack would be a challenge. Keeping all those factors into consideration and the odds on offer as well, a bet on the Afghanistan win should be the way to go here.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz was pretty severe on the Sri Lankan batsmen upfront and so was Hazratullah Zazai. Both of them are naturally aggressive batsmen who would love to take on the bowlers. Bangladesh, on the other hand, have a set of openers who like to take it slow in the beginning. Considering that, a bet on Afghanistan to have a higher score at the end of first six overs seems to be a pretty sensible option

While the average first-innings batting average at Sharjah is pretty low over the last year, it can be attributed to the number of matches played on the same surface. This will be a fresh surface and with short boundaries on both sides, a big score will be on the cards. Bet on match total to exceed 299.5.
