Test Cricket is well and truly alive. We have seen some fantastic advertisement for Test Cricket in the three recent test series with multiple matches going into the fifth day. The fans will be hoping that the trend continues to stay intact in the series between Bangladesh and West Indies as well.
West Indies, who experienced a deflating series defeat in the ODIs would want to script a comeback as well. Bangladesh, on the other hand, would want to use the advantage of playing at home and add a series win to their tally. This is going to be an exciting series, which begins with the first match to be played on 3rd February at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, Chattogram.
Bangladesh are playing the longest format of the game after a long time and might find a little difficult to adapt to the format and the conditions. Having said that, their recent win over West Indies, albeit in the shorter version, should help them in the longer version as well.
With Shakib Al Hasan injured in the last ODI, the hosts are now fretting over his replacement. It will be interesting to see if Shakib al Hasan is able to get fully fit, but if he isn't able to then it will be a huge setback for Bangladesh.
Apart from the injury concerns, Bangladesh will have a few other tough decisions to make as well. Their opening combination doesn't look solid and that is evident by the fact that Tamim Iqbal still doesn't have a fixed opening partner. We expect one of Shadman Islam and Saif Hassan to open along with the incumbent opener.
While Bangladesh's batting needs plenty of discussions, they have a pretty sorted bowling unit. So strong is their batting lineup is that they'll most probably be leaving Mustafizur Rahman out of the playing eleven. Considering the local conditions, Bangladesh rely heavily on their spinners, who all have a terrific reputation for doing well in spinner-friendly conditions.
All in all, Bangladesh have a fairly balanced side even without Shakib al Hasan. If fit, al Hasan will lend a tremendous amount of balance to the side considering the experience he brings in. Beating Bangladesh in Bangladesh has never been easy and if they manage to play to their potential, this series could prove to be extremely difficult for the visitors.
Tamim Iqbal, Shadman Islam, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mominul Haque, Mushfiqur Rahim, Shakib Al Hasan, Liton Das, Mehidy Hasan, Nayeem Hasan, Taijul Islam, Mustafizur Rahman.
The only silver lining for West Indies in the series so far has been the fact that they managed to salvage a draw in the only warm-up match. Prior to that, they were defeated ruthlessly in the ODI series and looked deflated. Joshua Da Silva and Raymon Reifer helped them draw the game, which at one time looked improbable.
West Indies will have a lot tougher challenge in the test series as they'll be facing a full-strength Bangladesh team. While Windies have a stronger side than they had in the ODIs, they still do not have the services of all the players who were part of the two series that West Indies played in recent times.
On paper, West Indies have a side that is brimming with talent but lack of experience could come back to haunt them in the conditions that most of their players will be playing for the first time. Kraigg Brathwaite, John Campbell, Jermaine Blackwood, and Rakheem Cornwall will form the backbone of Windies' batting unit. In addition to that, the likes of Raymon Reifer, Joshua Da Silva, and Nkrumah Bonner, who impressed in the warm-ups will have to step up once again for West Indies to present a challenge for the hosts.
On the bowling front, the Windies seem to be fairly well-equipped, but experience or lack thereof could be a concern. Shannon Gabriel and Kemar Roach will need to pick early wickets for West Indies' spinners to play a role in the middle overs. If Windies' bowling can keep Bangladesh batsmen from massive totals, the visitors might well end up surprising one and all.
Kraigg Brathwaite, John Campbell, Jermaine Blackwood, Sheyne Moseley, NE Bonner, Joshua De Silva, Kyle Mayers, Rahkeem Cornwall, Jomel Warrican, Kemar Roach, Shannon Gabriel.
After a dismal ODI series, West Indies will have a point to prove. They are reinforced for the test series with some experience and that is going to play a vital role in this series. Having said that, the majority of their side is still pretty inexperienced, and adapting to Bangladesh's conditions could prove to be a difficult task for them. Bangladesh, on the other hand, have experience oozing right through their lineup. Besides, they have the home advantage, which has so often proven to be game-changing in the longer version of the game. For all those reasons, betting on Bangladesh's win is the right way to go here.
