Almost all test playing nations have got a chance to come out on the field after a nine-month-long break that happened due to the pandemic. Bangladesh is one side whose wait will end when they host West Indies in an upcoming tour. The tour has taken a long time to commence, but it is finally here.
The tour that consists of three ODIs and two Tests will begin with the first of the three limited-overs matches. Unlike Bangladesh, West Indies have already played cricket after the break and they want to use that to their advantage. Both sides have a well-equipped side and we expect a cracking contest when these two teams take on each other on 20th January 2021 at Shere Bangla National Stadium, Dhaka.
Up until now, Bangladesh would have been frustrated to see every other team take the field. The news of West Indies touring Bangladesh came in as a moment of happiness for fans as well as the players. Also, Bangladesh will feel pretty confident that they'll be playing with the full-strength squad. The fact that there was no cricket over the last nine months means that Shakib Al Hasan was effectively never away from the national team.
In Tamim Iqbal, Bangladesh will be playing under the new captain. He was appointed in March last year but didn't feature as a captain in many matches before the play was paused. Taking a cue from the incidents of injuries in all the cricket we have seen in recent times, the selectors have played it safe by picking up a side of 18 members, which includes three potential debutants.
On paper, Bangladesh has an excellent team that covers all bases. With the likes of Liton Das, Tamim Iqbal, Shakib Al Hasan, and Mushfiqur Rahim available, their batting lineup is second to none. The presence of Mahedi Hasan and Soumya Sarkar adds to the depth without taking any balance away from the bowling. While their final bowling lineup will be determined by the conditions, it is likely to be pretty threatening regardless of the conditions.
All in all, Bangladesh have a side that is as settled as it was in the World Cup last year. The return of Shakib Al Hasan will act as a massive boost for them. Considering that they are playing at their home ground and the balance they have, beating them is going to take a colossal effort.
Tamim Iqbal, Liton Das, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah, Soumya Sarkar, Mehidy Hasan, Hasan Mahmud, Mustafizur Rahman, Rubel Hossain.
With this tour, West Indies have become the most traveled team in the world after the pandemic. Their players got back to cricket reasonably early with Caribbean Premier League. Post that, they have played three T20Is and five test matches. The biological bubble settings would have taken a toll on their players and understandably, most of their high-profile players have pulled out of this tour citing fatigue issues.
Apart from many players pulling out, the Windies sustained another blow when Hayden Walsh Jr and Romario Shepherd both tested positive for Covid-19. The absence of the experience in the lineup can certainly prove to be of significant importance, but that has paved the way for the younger talent to showcase their skills.
While the tourists are short on experience, the Caribbean Premier League showed that they are not short on talent. A lot will depend upon how the likes of Joshua da Silva, Jason Mohammad, Rovman Powell, Akeal Hosein, Alzarri Joseph do on the match day. If they can adapt to the conditions and handle pressure, the Windies will be all in to present a tough challenge to the hosts.
Sunil Ambris, Joshua De Silva, Andre McCarthy, NE Bonner, Jason Mohammed, Rovman Powell, Kyle Mayers, Akeal Hosein, Raymon Reifer, Alzarri Joseph, Chemar Holder.
There is a striking difference between the two sides on two accounts. First, the hosts have not played cricket since March 2020 whereas West Indies are the most traveled team since then. Second, Bangladesh are coming in with their full-strength team whereas West Indies have almost no one available from their main team. The two sides have not played cricket for a while so it would be unfair to compare these two sides on the basis of performance. Bangladesh will walk into the first match with the home advantage and a complete side available. Considering that, Bangladesh are firm favorites to emerge on top in the upcoming encounter.
