About the Match
Bangladesh is set to host a two-match Test series against Sri Lanka starting from Jan 27 at Dhaka; the Test matches will be followed by three ODIs and two T20 matches. The two nations had come face to face last year in March in Sri Lanka, where the hosts had won the Test series whereas the ODIs were tied. The visitors leveled the Test series against Pakistan recently whereas they lost the ODI series; Bangladesh on the other hand drew both Test matches against the Kiwis in October but managed an ODI series victory 3-0 against them. Both sides are eager to give their best performance here; it needs to be seen which team triumphs in the end.
They have many talented players who have been performing well in domestic-cricket; Shamsur Rahman who has proved himself in first-class cricket will be debuting in the Test format. Imrul Kayes, who played his last Test series in 2011 against West Indies has been included in the squad and is likely to open the batting along with Rahman. The established players like Mushfiqur Rahim, Tamim Iqbal, Shakib Al Hasan and Mominul Haque will need to provide a solid foundation in the innings. Bowlers like Abdur Razzak, Rubel Hossain, Sohag Gazi and Robiul Islam hold the key in providing regular breakthroughs whereas all-rounders Shakib, Mahmudullah and Nasir Hossain who did well in the last series against New Zealand will prove to be good resources. Most of the players contributed well during the Test series against the Kiwis and will be charged up to do well here too.
Their heroics against Pakistan, where they pulled off a victory in the second test match but lost the third match, led them to level the series 1-1 with some enthralling bowling efforts by Eranga, Lakmal, Pradeep and Herath. The bowlers have been in top form and executing their plans to perfection; this bowling unit is a formidable force to reckon with and will be key to their winning matches here. In the batting department, Angelo Mathews has led the team from the front and is in good form to get the big runs with great support from the likes of Mahela Jayawardene, Kaushal Silva, Perera and Dimuth Karunaratne who contributed well against Pakistan. Dinesh Chandimal hasn’t had success recently and can improve a lot to provide strength to the middle order whereas Sangakkara will need to step up and give the necessary support to the youngsters. The team did exceptionally well to put up a solid fight against the Pakistani contingent and will be highly confident to give a good show here too.
While Bangladesh has done well last year and will be eager to perform well in this home series, Sri Lanka has just finished a successful series against a top team and will be a difficult team to beat. Bangladesh has good resources and this young team is energetic and confident; however, even though they have the home advantage, they still need a lot of expertise to overcome the challenges that Sri Lankans will throw their way; this match looks like an easy win for the visitors.
Sri Lanka, 1.57 @ Bet365
Sri Lanka had to stay content with a leveled series after putting so many runs on the board. Their openers performed really well in that recently concluded series against Pakistan. On the other hand, Bangladeshi openers looked a little out of touch and haven’t played a match for some time. Keeping that things in mind, I think that Sri Lankans will put up a better opening stand than their opponents.
