About the Match
Barely managing to qualify for the Super 10 stage of the World T20 series, hosts Bangladesh will go up against West Indies in their first Group 2 match at Mirpur on Mar 25th. West Indies on the other hand, suffered defeat against India and have yet to open their account in the points table. The format of the competition makes it imperative for teams to register wins convincingly; the upcoming match will be crucial for both teams and it’s an opportunity for them to set right their course and keep their hopes alive.
The defeat against Hong Kong in the last qualifier match was a big embarrassment for the team although the opponents did them a favour and made it possible for Bangladesh to overcome the competition from Nepal. From here on, the hosts will have to show more grit and determination if they want to make it to the semi-final stage. On the positives, they have the power packed all-round performance by Shakib Al Hasan, who not only scored 34 off 27 balls against Hong Kong but also took 3 wickets giving away a miserly 9 runs from his 4 over spell. Then there are the in-form batsmen Tamim Iqbal, Mushfiqur Rahim and Anamul Haque, who will be joined by Ziaur Rehman as he replaces the injured Rubel Hossain. The bowling squad has Mahmudullah, Abdur Razzak, Al Amin, Sabbir Rahman, Mashrafe Mortaza and Farhad Reza, who have been taking wickets regularly but need to be more consistent with their performance. Their strength against West Indies lies in their spin attack; the batsmen need to avoid the reckless shots and hold their nerves together here.
Their opening group match against India showed quite an uncharacteristic performance by the batsmen, in this format of the game; their flamboyance was replaced by a sluggish batting with Gayle scoring his slowest 33-ball 34 runs before getting run-out. Dwayne Smith, Samuels, Sammy and Bravo struggled to keep the scoreboard going and crumbled under pressure with the entire batting unit wrapped up for 129 runs. They showed their weakness against spin bowling and pace attack; the batsmen will have to pull up their socks and go for the big runs here. The bowling too was ordinary and with a low total to defend, they were hardly left with options against India. The competition is set to get tougher and if they want to stay alive, this match offers them a chance for redemption. The team has a good record in T20 format and if they can manage to keep a cool head above their shoulders, West Indies can surely overcome the challenges here.
It’s still anybody’s game at this early stage of the competition; however Bangladesh will need to restore the faith of their fans and start on a positive note here whereas West Indies will need to take this as a wake-up call if they want to improve their chances. While the hosts have good resources to take them through, the West Indies are better game-changers and are looking well placed to make a comeback with a win here.
