Amid all the uncertainties surrounding the fate of the tournament, Women's ODI World Cup Qualifiers are back on track. We saw Sri Lanka Women trounce Netherlands Women in a closely fought encounter in an important Group A match. Group B is turning out to be a tad more exciting with two teams tied in the mid-part of the points table as of now. The next few matches are going to be pretty crucial in determining who gets to progress to the next round from this group.
Up next in the competition, Bangladesh Women are all set to take on Thailand Women in an important Group B contest. The match between the two sides will be played at the Harare Sports Club on 25th November 2021. Considering the position these sides are in, a cracker of a contest is certainly on the cards.
Bangladesh Women have been in Zimbabwe for quite some time now and their prior recent experience seems to have done a mighty good job in acquainting the Tigers with the conditions here. They first defeated Zimbabwe Women 3-0 in the series played before the World Cup Qualifiers and then topped that up with a brilliant win over USA in what was the first match for both these sides.
With that win, Bangladesh Women are now leading the top of the points table with two wins and zero losses. Also, considering their terrific net run rate of 2.728, they are almost certain to qualify for the next round, unless of course they make any blunders going forward. Their win over USA is the main reason for their fantastic net run rate as they registered that win by a massive margin of 270 runs.
Batting first on a decent surface, Bangladesh Women racked up a total of 322. While they were assisted by USA bowlers giving a lot of freebies away, Bangladesh batsmen did show a lot of discipline in their approach. Nigar Sultana smashed a fantastic century and she was ably assisted by Fargana Hoque, who scored 67 off 62 balls. In the second innings, USA proved to be no match for Bangladesh's might as they folded for a total of just 52.
All in all, Bangladesh have a well-balanced lineup and the fact that they have been here for quite some time now seems to be helping them. Given the form they are in, they will certainly be brimming with confidence. If they are able to play to their potential in the upcoming match as well, they should cruise to yet another win in this upcoming contest.
Murshida Khatun, Sharmin Akhter, Nigar Sultana, Fargana Hoque, Salma Khatun, Rumana Ahmed, Nahida Akter, Lata Mondal, Fahima Khatun, Jahanara Alam, Ritu Moni.
Thailand Women are pretty new to the international scene and should be pretty happy that they already have a win under their belt in this tournament. They are currently placed at the third spot on the points table with two points in two matches and a win here for them will certainly make things interesting in their group. Having said that, it is not going to be easy and they will need to play out of their skins.
Thailand Women started their campaign with a terrific win over Zimbabwe Women in what was the opening contest for both these sides. However, they could not continue to build onto the momentum as they then faced a 52-run defeat at the hands of Pakistan Women in their subsequent fixture, which happened to be a low-scoring encounter.
Going by what we have seen Thailand Women do in their two matches gone so far is that they have been in excellent bowling form. Their bowlers kept Pakistan Women under control for the most part of the match and eventually restricted them to just 145. However, their batsmen just could not do the job as they got completely dismantled for a total of 93 runs.
On paper and performance-wise, bowling is certainly Thailand's area of strength. With the bat, however, they are clearly a little too over-reliant on their top-order and that could come back to bite them in crunch situations. All in all, Thailand Women are certainly a very capable side and we have seen that already. If they are able to play to their potential and can exploit Bangladesh's weak points, they should be in business.
Nattaya Boochatham, Naruemol Chaiwai, Thipatcha Putthawong, Chanida Sutthiruang, Nattakan Chantam, Suleeporn Laomi, Sornnarin Tippoch, Rosenan Kanoh, Wongpaka Liengprasert, Nannapat Khoncharoenkai, Onnicha Kamchomphu.
