About the Match
Current champions Barbados Tridents will take on two-time runners-up, Guyana Amazon Warriors in the first match of this season’s Caribbean Premier League at Bridgetown on 20th June. While the Tridents have some famous international players roped in to play for them, the Warriors have also left no stone unturned to try and go one step further to take the title this time. It all will come down to performance on the field as far as this shorter format of the game has time and again shown the audience; the crowds will surely be there to cheer their teams and start this cricket fest with a bang.
Kieron Pollard, Dwayne Smith and Shoaib Malik are in good form to provide the impetus with the bat; with all-rounders and youngsters like Shai Hope, Akeal Hosein and Kyle Corbin on their side, the batting line-up looks quite confident to set up big totals or chase with ease. Bowlers Jason Holder, Jonathan Carter, Rayad Emrit, Ashley Nurse, Navin Stewart and Robin Peterson have been performing well to take wickets consistently and they will be required to provide the breakthroughs to start on a positive note. Middle order batsmen like Ravi Rampaul and Dilshan Munaweera, they can hope to keep the scoreboard ticking and build strong foundations. They have quite a good mix of youth and experience in their squad, which gives them the added advantage to face crunch situations with a can-do attitude; having the extra motivation to hold on to the title, the Tridents go in as favourites to do well and win the first match of the season.
Guyana Amazon Warriors
Coming second twice by narrow margins has surely tested their patience and the Warriors will be eager to have the last laugh this time around. With players like Tillakaratne Dilshan who is always determined to do well, the experienced Chanderpaul who knows these territories very well and Lendl Simmons, who has been doing well in recent times, the squad looks quite pumped up about its chances here. While Simmons has been getting the big runs, Umar Akmal has been included in the team for his power-packed performances; along with all-rounders like Thisara Perera, Trevon Griffith, Devendra Bishoo, Chris Barnwell, Assad Fudadin and Veerasammy Permaul , this team can be tough nut to crack this season. Bowlers Malinga and Sunil Narine will lead the attack while the youngsters will be motivated to do well on the world stage; Brad Hodge, Denesh Ramdin and other talented batsmen will need to shoulder the responsibilities to get the big runs on board. Overall, the team has a good balance of batsmen and bowlers, who can perform under pressure to take the team safely home.
Although the Warriors will be eager to start their campaign on a winning note here on Saturday, we think that the Tridents have more fire-power to overcome challenges and win their first match amidst a strong crowd support that will be rooting for the reigning champions.
