About the Match
Barbados Tridents, who are comfortably placed at the top with 8 points in their bag, come face to face with Jamaica Tallawahs on August 18 at 12:30am IST for the first time in the CPL. Tallawahs with 6 points in their kitty look for a thumping entry into the semi-finals. Sabina Park, Kingston will see lots of action on Saturday when the heavy-hitters from both the teams would want to put up a show for their fans. While Barbados has suffered losses in their last two matches, thanks to the dismal performance of their batsmen, the Tallawahs too are struggling with some of the team members being out of form. Though both the teams are closer to reserving their berth in the semi-finals, this match is crucial for them to be in the running with the same confidence shown earlier in the league.
Having lost the last two matches, the Tridents look for winning boost before the semi-finals. In-form batsmen Smith and Shoaib Malik have performed well in the series barring the poor show in their last match against Hawksbills. Smith’s 48 off 38 balls and Pollard’s 34 not out, down the order earned them their huge 83-run win against the Zouks. However, their dismal performance in the last match leading to a lowly post of 97 has shaken their ground. The bowlers on the other hand did well for the team with Emrit picking up 3 wickets and Shakib taking 2 wickets against the Amazon Warriors. Pollard needs to do a quick reality check and look to continue their winning streak.
Having suffered both their losses in the league to the Amazon Warriors, the Tallawahs would have introspected to draw out their strengths and peak at this crucial juncture. Top scorers Andre Russell and Captain Chris Gayle have shown their mettle time and again in this series; however in the last match it was a lone battle for Gayle with no support from his batsmen. Philander, who has contributed well with both bat and the ball, will look to repeat his spectacular performances so far. Fellow bowlers Bernard and Muralitharan need to step up and rise to the occasion, to secure a comfortable win in tomorrow’s match.
Chris and Russell are in great form and they have sufficient strength in the middle order too. However, the big take-away from the previous match was that the batsmen need to keep a cool head to prevent another tumble of wickets, especially against bowlers like Emrit and Shakib who have performed extremely well for their team. Meanwhile, Smith and Carter need to recreate the magic with their bats with Shoaib leading from the front. Shakib and Pollard, who failed to open their account in the last outing, need to find their ground. It will be a tough match with both sides looking for a win after their previous losses. However, I think that this match will be a smooth sail for the Jamaica Tallawahs mainly due to the Chris Gayle factor.
