About the Match
The Tridents defeated Zouks by 15 runs on Wednesday to maintain the top spot on the table with 8 points and they will once again face the Zouks on 3rd July at Basseterre in the twelfth match of the series. The Zouks who have suffered two straight losses in the last two outings, have 5 points on board and are placed at the second position, and will be eager to avenge their defeat on Friday. It needs to be seen if the Tridents continue to dominate on the field; the result could go either way but surely it will be a keen contest.
St. Lucia Zouks
Chasing 148 runs against Tridents, the batsmen put up a dismal performance with most of them getting out for single digits; Fletcher’s 52 off 38 was the highlight of the innings with Ross Taylor and Sammy trying hard to survive. Bowlers Roach, Sammy, Edwards and McCullum are in good form and took regular wickets to restrict the opposition. Although the defeat by 15 runs was a shocking blow to the team, they do have the determination and talent to bounce back and avenge that loss.
Against the Tallawahs too it was a failure from the batsmen as they were able to post only 118 runs on board batting first; a string of ducks in the middle order which was preceded by wickets falling at regular pace, doomed the Zouks early on in the game. Although Charles and Pietersen posted 20+ runs each, the others failed to impress with the bat.
The team has suffered two consecutive losses after registering convincing wins at the start of the tournament and will need to make a comeback here; they have good bowlers like Roach, Sammy and Fidel Edwards who are ruthless when it comes to executing the plan. If the batsmen can come out all guns blazing here, they will surely have the advantage to defeat the opponent on Friday.
Shoaib Malik’s 51 off 34 powered the Tridents to a decent 148 after losing quick wickets on the way; the bowlers successfully defended the total against the Zouks with Emrit taking 3-20 and Peterson and Mendis taking two scalps each. Although Smith and Munaweera posted 20+ runs each in the beginning, the momentum was lost with the dismissals of Pollard and Peterson; however, Malik came to the rescue and stayed on to keep the scoreboard ticking.
In the previous match against Patriots, the team failed to achieve a low target of 143 runs and the good efforts of the bowlers went in vain; only Pollard and Malik were able to handle the pressure with the former posting 82 off 58 but the others in the batting line-up performed poorly. They will have to step up their game to avoid such a colossal loss yet again.
Overall, the team has a good mix of established batsmen like Malik, Pollard, Smith and Carter, who can resist the Zouks and post a huge total or chase one with ease; the bowlers have been consistent with players like Emrit, Rampaul, Peterson, Mendis and Holder regularly taking wickets.
The two teams have recently met each other and they each know how to outwit the other; although the Zouks will be determined to avenge their defeat and come back stronger, we feel that the Tridents are better placed to win the match again
