More often than not the clashes between the teams that are having contrasting fortunes in a tournament produce humdrum contests. It may happen to be a similar affair when Sydney Thunder takes on Brisbane Heat in an upcoming Big Bash League contest, but we expect the match to be a lot tighter than it seems from the outside.
Sydney Thunder have been one of the best teams of the tournament whereas Brisbane Heat are competing hard to grab the wooden-spoon. Having said that, both sides have some terrific players, who all are capable to turn the match around in a matter of minutes. This upcoming match is to be played at Brisbane Cricket Ground, Woolloongabba, Brisbane, on 4th December 2020.
Even though Brisbane Heat are languishing in the bottom half of the points table, its not that they have done as poorly as their position on the points table reflects. Their net run-rate, which is -0.003 is proof enough that even though they have lost more often than they have won, their losses haven't come without Heat putting in fights. They are currently placed at the seventh spot with eight points to their name and a win here might very well push them to the sixth spot.
In the tournament so far, the fortunes have clearly not favored Brisbane Heat. They lost Chris Lynn, their mainstay, earlier in the tournament and have been struggling for fire-power in their middle-order ever since. Jimmy Peirson has captained the side brilliantly in Lynn's absence and his own performance with the bat has been admirable as well. The inclusion of Lewis Gregory has helped Heat with the much-needed depth and variety to their lineup and as seen in T20 Blast, Gregory can be a match-winner on his day.
Another thing that works in Heat's favor for this match is that they'll have the services of Joe Denly and Joe Burns available. James Bazley, with his performances in the recent matches, proved he can be relied on and trusted upon.
When the two sides met earlier, Brisbane Heat seemed to be enjoying the upper hand before Daniel Sams single-handedly snatched the win away from Heat. Heat would want to avenge that and are likely to come in all guns blazing. If they can get things right with their batting, they certainly have a bowling unit that can work wonders on the surface that this match will be played on.

There's no denying the supremacy with which the Thunder have played in the tournament so far. They have registered five wins out of their six completed matches and another win here should be enough to push them to the top of the ladder. Besides, they have a terrific net run-rate of 1.88, which is best among all teams in the competition and exhibits how dominant they have been.
Much of their success can be attributed to the form that their openers have been in. Alex Hales and Usman Khawaja have both looked in sublime touches and have allowed the middle-order players to play their natural game right from the outset. Apart from them, the likes of Callum Ferguson, Sam Billings, Daniel Sams, Alex Ross, and Ben Cutting add power their batting order without taking anything away from the bowling strength. Considering the players they have, it hasn't been surprising that the Thunder have been the team to scale massive totals so consistently this year.
Adam Milne and Daniel Sams have been incredibly good for the Thunder, but their breakout star has been Tanveer Sangha, who has flown under the radar thus far. He has already picked up ten wickets in the tournament and his fourth in the top wicket-takers list. His economy and average have both been astonishing, speaking volumes about the difference he has made to the Thunder's bowling unit.
As we have seen in the tournament already, Syndey Thunder have almost everything covered and their position on the points table reflects that. On paper, they have an excellent side and it would take something special from Heat to keep Thunder at bay. Beating Thunder, especially when they are in such form, is going to be incredibly difficult for Brisbane Heat.

This is an excellent surface to bat on and is not going to change over the course of 40 overs. With lights taking full effect in the second innings, batting is going to get increasingly easier as the match progresses. The captain winning the toss should be looking to field first.

We haven't really seen towering totals being scored in the tournament and more so at this venue. Even though Bellerive Oval offers a true surface to bat on, the extra bounce here offers something to the bowlers as well. We expect spinners to play a crucial role here. We have seen middling scores being defended here and a score in the range of 170 would be about par here. The team batting first would want to put at least 180 runs on the board to have an upper hand going into the break.

Comparing the two sides on the basis of performances and the combinations of the two sides, Brisbane Heat certainly head into this contest as underdogs. While they'll be pumped with their recent win over Sydney Sixers and are capable enough to beat any side on their day, beating Thunder will take yet another special effort. Considering that and the form the two sides have been in, we expect Sydney Thunder to sail through to yet another win in this all-important encounter.
