The defending champions of the WBBL are going to have a hard time defending their title this season. They are without their best batter and best bowler, who have both shifted to other franchises. Are they ripe for the picking, though or is there enough talent in the lineup to be able to continue their WBBL success?
The road for Brisbane Heat started with taking on the Melbourne Renegades on the opening weekend of WBBL 2020. The Renegades have a decent side themselves and they have added some reinforcements in the off-season as well. They are not going to be a pushover for any side and harbor their own title ambitions.
Brisbane Heat vs Melbourne Renegades WBBL 2020 is going to be played at the Hurstville Oval, Sydney on the 26th of October 2020.
Brisbane Heat is a weaker team this season than in the previous one and there is no doubt about that. You cannot lose players like Beth Mooney and Sammy-Jo Johnson and some out stronger. It just does not happen.
However, Brisbane Heat has more tricks up its sleeve. The added responsibility on Grace Harris at the top of the order is going to be interesting to see. She is one of the most exciting batters in women’s cricket and already has two smashing centuries to her name in the WBBL.
If Georgia Redmayne, Amelia Kerr, and Nadine de Klerk can perform consistently then Brisbane Heat may be able to overcome the loss of Beth Mooney’s runs.
Similarly, Jess Jonassen and Delissa Kimmince will have to lead the way in compensating for the absence of Sammy-Jo Johnson. In addition, Jess Jonassen is the captain for Brisbane Heat this season as well. Will she be able to perform her all-round duties alongside leading the team? That is a big question that remains to be answered.
There is potential in this Brisbane Heat lineup but there are a lot of questions to be answered as well.

The Melbourne Renegades are a strong defensive unit. They have a very good bowling attack with three Australian internationals to lead the way. That means that the Melbourne Renegades are always going to be in the game, no matter what their batters do.
In general, the teams with good bowling attacks are consistent performers. You know what you are going to get with them on most days. If they have a good batting lineup as well, then you have a winning combination.
This is the question that we need to answer. Do the Melbourne Renegades have enough strength in their batting?
Amy Satterthwaite and Lizelle Lee have been added to the squad to give the batting a definite boost, however, we still think the Renegades might struggle a bit. Satterthwaite is very good but she is not a match-winner on most occasions. Lizelle Lee is a definite match-winner but is just too inconsistent.
This is why we are a bit hesitant to back them unconditionally. Molly Strano, Georgia Wareham, and Sophie Molineux are going to make sure that the Melbourne Renegades are no pushovers, however, the batting seems to be a bit thin this season.

The team that wins the toss is going to want to bat first. The pitches in Sydney could become a bit more difficult to score on as the match progresses.

The conditions in Sydney are always a bit helpful to the spinners no matter where you play. That is something that could be advantageous for the Melbourne Renegades down the line but maybe not right at the start of the WBBL.
A score of around 140 should be seen as par and something that the teams will be happy to defend.
We think Brisbane Heat is the team to back in this contest. Heat seems to have more bases covered than the Renegades. Their batting appears to be stronger and the bowling is not too bad either. It is also a team where the players are used to winning and that makes a big difference.
Bet on Brisbane Heat to win.
