Brisbane Heat Women

The Heat probably should have picked up the win, but if it weren’t for a stunning six on the second-last ball by Sixers’ Maitlan Brown, then they very nearly would have.

It’s worth mentioning that two of the Heat’s biggest signings were both missing, Danni Wyatt and Pooja Vastrakar, due to international cricket duty. They should be back for at least the third or fourth matches on the WBBL schedule.

There’s a lot to be excited about for Georgia Redmayne, though, who picked up 49 runs from 39 deliveries in the loss to Sydney. Jess Kerr, too, impressed on the bowling side by finishing the game with 2/17 (4.25 ER) after four overs.

Melbourne Stars Women

There’s a fair bit of change for the Melbourne Stars. For one, brilliant player Meg Lanning will continue to sit out the season after choosing an indefinite break from the WBBL. She may well return at some point, but it won’t be this year.

Furthermore, Elyse Villani ended her contract with the Stars and now plays for the Hurricanes. Also departing is Maddy Darke to the Scorchers and there’s news that Erin Osborne has opted for retirement.

There’s still life in the team and a lot of talent that’s ready to fight for wins. Nicole Faltum is now the captain and remains a fine choice, plus, the Stars have fantastic Indian batter, Jemimah Rodrigues, to help fill the top order. Kim Garth is now a real Australian, so that helped provide an additional overseas player roster spot.
