About the Match
The sixth edition of the KPL got off to an exciting start as Hubli managed to defeat Belagavi in an encounter that was closer than the scoreboard might suggest. The next match is between the Bengaluru Blasters and the Mysuru Warriors.
This is the first year that a team from Bangalore will be represented in the KPL. They will be taking the place of the so called Rockstars, a team of amateur movie star cricketers that were quite frankly an embarrassment to this competition.
The blasters managed to secure the services of R Samarth in the auction and will build their batting around him. Samarth scored 315 runs off just 6 innings last year for the Bijapur Bulls with 27 fours and 8 sixes to his name. He also had 4 fifties from those six matches and raised excitement about what he could have achieved given a complete run.
Giving his support will be Pavan Deshpande, another impressive batsman from last season who scored 122 runs in 6 innings. He comes late in the order and will play the role of a finisher for the Blasters.
Mitrakant Yadav will take the responsibility of leading the bowling for the Blasters alongside V Koushik. Both the bowlers had a middling last season but the potential to improve was clearly there.
It will be interesting to see how the Blasters will face in this tournament given that all the teams are starting with a clean slate. There should be no advantage to them theoretically but it can take some time for the management structures to be put in place.
The Mysuru Warriors were dominant in the last tournament winning all seven of their matches in the group stages. Their loss in the semi final was a huge upset and one that the team management will want to put behind itself as quickly as possible.
Leading the batting for the Warriors will be Karun Nair, a player that has grown in stature considerably since the last edition of the tournament. He is expected to be available for the entire tournament this year and will want to dominate the competition.
He will have useful support in the team from Shreyas Gopal who can both score runs and pick wickets at important intervals. Arjun Hoysala will also want to continue the excellent tournament he had last year scoring 236 runs with a best of 89 not out.
Mysuru’s success last year was built on the bowling of J Suchith who took 15 wickets and was the leading wicket taker for the entire competition. He was snagged by the Mysuru Warriors in this auction again giving their team a massive boost.
With some other good performers from last year like SP Manjunath and Suneel Raju in their team, Mysuru looks like the team to beat this season as well.
Pitch and Conditions
The pitch at the Chinnaswamy was pacy and excellent for batting in the first match. There is hope that the same should be on offer for this match as well. The weather is a bit wet in Bengaluru and so some rain interruptions can be expected.
