About the Match
The Scorchers defeated Adelaide Strikers by 18 runs in the last game, becoming the first team to do so this season; with this win, the Scorchers have moved up to the 2nd position on the table with 6 points in the bag and will take on Brisbane Heat, who have only 2 points till now, on 8th Jan at Perth. The hosts are riding a wave of enthusiasm after winning against the table toppers in a convincing manner; on the other hand, Brisbane Heat, which has only won against the Melbourne Stars earlier on, will try to make amends and start climbing up the ladder with a better performance on Thursday.
Their lone victory till now came in a close contest against Melbourne Stars after setting a target of 164 runs, which was defended beautifully by the bowlers Duffield, Flintoff, Vettori and Christian; however with Vettori leaving the squad to serve his national team, Stephen Parry the spinner comes in as replacement. The team had tasted success 2 years back, becoming the champions; however, their performance is not up to the mark yet and need to rejuvenate themselves if they want to stay in the running. Peirson, Forrest and Lynn are doing well in the top order while Cutting and Reardon kept the scoreboard ticking against the Strikers in the last match; however, they couldn’t get to a big enough total and the bowlers found it difficult to contain the opponents. The players have the determination to win but need to focus on their strengths and come back stronger on the field.
Adam Voges led from the front as he posted a good 54 off 36 deliveries to help the team get to a respectable total of 133 runs; with Klinger, who has been in good nick with the bat, getting out after scoring 21 and the rest of the batting line-up crumbling under pressure, Voges’ contribution was commendable. However, it was the bowlers’ conviction that earned them victory, in spite of a difficult score to defend; Brad Hogg with figure of 2-11 was astounding with the ball whereas Tye, Agar, Arafat and Behrendorff claimed quick wickets to surprise the Strikers. They won the match by 18 runs, thus handing out the Strikers’ their first defeat this season; the victory has surely boosted their morale and they will come out all guns blazing against Brisbane Heat. In the previous match, they had lost to Sydney Thunder while chasing 180 runs; the batsmen need to be cautious against players like Duffield and Flintoff, who have been among wicket-takers in recent matches.
The Scorchers have received a shot in the arm by defeating table toppers Strikers in the recent contest; the fact that they are playing on home turf, makes it an added advantage for the hosts. However, we think that the Brisbane Heat, which is eager to go back to winning ways, will try different combinations to dominate the Scorchers and emerge victorious here.
