About the Match
Successfully defending a low total of 129 runs against Titans on Wednesday, the Cobras took their points tally to 25 and continue to lead the rest of the teams in the ongoing Ram Slam T20 series. They will now face the Dolphins on Friday, Jan 24th at Boland Park, Paarl and will look to continue on their winning roll here. The Dolphins are placed second on the table with 15 points after they defeated the Lions by 16 runs in the last match and this match will be crucial for them to avoid the stiff competition that they might face to make it to the knockout stage. While both teams are equally matched and could give a tough fight to each other, whichever team wins here can surely hope to make it to the semi-final stage.
Winning the match against Titans by 13 runs, the team achieved their 6th win in seven matches to take a ten-point lead against the Dolphins. The batsmen struggled and it exposed their weakness of playing under pressure. Staggering at 79-4, the batting line-up collapsed and it was Amla and Duminy’s 60-run partnership that took them to a respectable score of 129 runs. It was an uncharacteristic performance by the batsmen and it’ll be a major concern with the semi-finals round the corner; however, the bowlers made up for it and took wickets in quick succession to restrict the Titans from reaching the target. Hendricks has been at the top of his game and took 3 wickets while Robin Peterson and Narine took 3 wickets between them to provide great support to the team. The batsmen need to pull up their socks and not let their guard down whereas the tight bowling unit looks confident to repeat its exemplary performance in the upcoming matches.
The top order run amok with the big runs and made a 105-run opening partnership; while Delport scored 82 runs off 44 deliveries, van Wyk scored 44 runs off just 22 balls. Miller contributed another 60 runs off 40 balls and did well alongside Jaarsveld to take the total to 214 runs at the loss of just 2 wickets. It was a treat to the eyes as the batsmen lofted many sixes and smashed away boundaries regularly to exert their dominance over the Lions. In the bowling department, Frylinck and Abbott strangled the opponents’ top order taking 2 wickets each and the duo has been performing consistently to give their team the competitive edge. However, the bowling needs to be sharper as many runs were leaked and they could have done better to restrict the Lions from being only 16 runs away from a win. With the competition heating up, the Dolphins need to focus on winning every match if they want to keep their hopes alive.
The Cobras are sitting right on top of the table and even if they lose this match, their position will be safe for now; however, backed up by some strong performances on the field, the Cobras look almost invincible. The Dolphins on the other hand will look to bridge the gap between themselves and the topmost team; while the match could go either way, it looks like the Dolphins might pull off a win here.
