About the Match
It was a magnificent win for Cape Cobras against Tridents to stay alive in the CLT20 championship and they now take their campaign ahead with the upcoming match against semi-final qualifiers Kings XI at Mohali on 28th Sep. The Kings XI too had a massive victory against Northern D by 120 runs, setting a big target of 216 for the opponents and then annihilating their batting line-up for 95 runs, thus making it through to the next stage with 12 points. The Cobras survived the scare against Tridents by winning the one-over eliminator after the match went for a draw; they now have 4 points and stand 3rd on the table in Group B.
It was a collective effort by the Cobras led by Ontong, successfully chasing 175 runs to tie the match against Tridents and then going on to hold their nerves to win the one-over eliminator. Engelbrecht, who claimed 2 wickets and also scored the winning runs for the team, displayed very good all-rounder skills and dependability to win the man of the match award. Along with Justin Kemp, he added 31 runs to the table to get his team safely home; earlier, Amla returned with his hard-hitting skills by scoring 59 off 42 balls and Richard Levi continued with his good form by posting 39 off just 18 balls. From the bowling unit Langeveldt also took 2 wickets in addition to Engelbrecht’s 2 wicket haul and good fielding skills to cause a run-out; Philander did a better job this time around and got a wicket to turn things around for the team and the bowlers performed well to restrict the opponents to 174 runs. The team is jubilant from their win and will be determined to give their best efforts to sustain the competition and keep their hopes alive in the upcoming matches.
Kings XI Punjab
Sehwag opened the innings and got off to a flamboyant start, scoring a well-made 52 off 37 balls and creating a 102-run opening stand with Vohra against Northern D. The batting line-up is very strong and with players like Miller, Bailey, Maxwell and Perera down the order, they can be a tough team to beat; while Vohra batted extraordinarily to give strong support to Sehwag and score 65 off 32 balls, Miller and Bailey ensured to keep the scoreboard ticking and take the total to 215 runs. With a massive score to defend, the bowlers kept up and Karanveer Singh, who continues to surprise everyone with his disciplined attack, claimed 4 wickets giving away only 15 runs to suffocate the opponents. Akshar Patel helped in taking regular wickets and claimed 2-16 and along with Perera and Anureet Singh, who took a wicket each, demolished the Knights for 95 in 16 overs. The win has strengthened the players’ determination for the upcoming matches; this team will be the one to look out for in the coming days as they continue to display great cricketing skills in all departments of the game.
While the Cobras have received a shot in the arm by surviving till now, the upcoming match against Kings XI will be a tough challenge; though the match will be a live wire the Kings XI seem much better placed to win the contest.
