About the Match
The Cobras are yet to win a match this season and are placed 5th with zero points; they will once again take on Lions, who are standing in the 2nd position with 8 points, on 24th November at Paarl. When the two teams met earlier last week, Lions had emerged victorious by 7 wickets and will try to repeat the winning performance again. Cobras on the other hand, have suffered three consecutive defeats and are desperate for a win here. It needs to be seen which team can overcome the challenges and earn some points on Friday.
They have good resources in the batting unit like Hashim Amla, JP Duminy, Wayne Parnell and Temba Bavuma; however, they could muster only 119 runs batting first against Titans in the last game. Captain JP Duminy posted 40 while Bavuma contributed with 27 runs but others failed to impress. Speedster Vernon Philander took 2 wickets in an economical way but others like Parnell gave away too many runs, leading to defeat by 7 wickets. The bowling unit has other pacers like Dane Paterson, Mthiwekhaya Nabe and spinner George Linde, who can try to outwit opponents.
Batting first against Lions, they did well to accumulate 169 runs on board thanks to a super captain’s knock of 55 off 31 by Duminy. Amla, Parnell and Bavuma also pitched in to keep the scoreboard ticking. However, the bowlers yet again put up a dismal show and despite a good show by Philander, they couldn’t stop the opponents from winning the match by 7 wickets.
The Cobras are yet to taste success this season but they can make a comeback on Friday if they apply themselves in all departments of the game.
Mangaliso Mosehle top-scored in the match against Cobras, posting 55 off 36 to help them chase down 170 runs with ease. Reeza Hendricks and Omphile Ramela also contributed well with steady runs and they won the match by 7 wickets.
Earlier, pacer Kagiso Rabada and spinner Aaron Phangiso claimed 2 wickets each to restrict the Cobras. They have variety of pace options in Dwayne Pretorius, Hardus Viljoen and Beuran Hendricks while youngster Willem Mulder can support well with his medium-pace. Against Dolphins, spinner Aaron Phangiso took 2 wickets while pacers Bjorn Fortuin, Rabada and Viljoen dismissed one wicket each to contain the opponents to 168. Reeza Hendricks then came out all guns blazing with the bat to post a brilliant 102 and steer the team toward victory. Opener Rassie van der Dussen also pitched in with 57 and helped wrap up the win on time.
The Lions have consistently performed well with bat and ball till now, and can prove to be a formidable force to reckon with on Friday.
Having won against Cobras earlier, the Lions surely are clear favourites to win the match; however, we feel that with the help of all-rounders like Duminy and Parnell, the Cobras will be a tougher opponent this time and will try hard to avenge their previous defeat and win this time around, but given the form of the teams, Lions have better chances to prevail in this all-important encounter for Cobras.
