About the Match
With 30 points on the table, the Cobras inched closer to make it to the final of the Ram Slam T20 Challenge series; winning the last match against the Lions that gave them the bonus points, Cape Cobras have maintained their lead and will now face the Warriors in the last league match of the season on Feb 2 at Cape Town. The Warriors, who have 20 points, face stiff competition from the Titans who are only 2 points behind them and will need to win this match to take them safely ahead. The Cobras on the other face threat from the Dolphins, who are just 2 points behind and will most likely win the match against the Lions tomorrow. This match is crucial for both teams; while the Cobras hope to make it to the final with a win here, the Warriors want to ward off the competition from the Titans.
Choosing to field first against the Lions yesterday, the bowlers Vernon Philander, Hendricks and Robin Peterson demolished the opponents, taking 3 wickets each and getting six batsmen out for ducks. They dominated throughout the innings and restricted the Lions to 102 runs, getting them all-out by the 18th over itself. The batsmen had an easy job on their hands and they won the match with more than four overs to spare; while Richard Levi and Stiaan van Zyl scored 24 runs each, Dane Vilas posted 26 runs with Ontong and Duminy scoring the winning runs. Bowling has been their strength and with their excellent performance in this season of domestic cricket, the Cobras clearly go in as favorites for the title.
It was a mighty effort to beat the Dolphins in the last match by 2 runs; Smuts and Ryan Bailey did well to post a 56-run partnership after losing 2 early wickets, though sadly Bailey missed his half-century by 1 run. Defending 141 runs, the bowlers Parnell, Theron, Birch and Mbane wiped out the opponents with ease though they took some time to find answers to break the partnership of Miller and Zondo. The lower order collapsed and the Warriors wrapped up a win with a 2-runs margin. While the victory took them closer to the knockout stage, they will need to perform better here and win the match or hope that the Titans lose their match against the Knights. With their batsmen and bowlers looking in good form, they seem confident to win this contest.
It has been a cruise so far for the Cobras and while they did well to maintain their top position, they face a significant threat from the Dolphins who are also in the running for the finals. This match will be a tough contest as both sides have a lot to lose here and will try to dominate the other and win the match; while the Cobras are the favorites, the Warriors look well placed to spoil their opponents ‘party.
