We still have four matches to go in the Bangladesh Premier League and the playoff spots already looked sealed. Comilla Warriors might have an outside chance to qualify for the playoffs, but for that to happen, they would not only have to win their only remaining game, but would also have to hope for Khulna Tigers to lose both their matches and then the net run-rate would come into the picture. A loss for Warriors, however, would mean curtains for them. It will all get clear after the conclusion of the upcoming game in the tournament, the game which is to be played between Comilla Warriors and Khulna Tigers on Friday, 10th January, at Shere Bangla National Cricket Stadium, Dhaka.
With five wins from eleven matches, the Warriors are sitting just outside the top-four sides and the possibility of them making it to the top four looks bleak. That is largely due to their net run-rate, which is not as bad, but a lot less than that of the team right above them on the ladder.
The Warriors of coming off a brutal loss at the hands of Khulna Tigers, the loss which also damaged their net run-rate. Their upcoming match, too, is against the Tigers and beating them is undoubtedly going to take massive work.
In the previous match, their bowlers as well as their batsmen both failed to live upto the expectations as Warriors lost the match by 34 runs. Chasing a total of 179, their batsmen fell like a pack of cards with only Sabbir Rahman able to score freely. Rahman played a superb knock, scoring 62 runs off just 39 deliveries, the knock that included seven fours and two sixes. Apart from him, however, no batsmen looked settled on the crease and the fact that next best score was 27 by Yasir Ali is an evidence of it.
Earlier with the ball, they started off pretty well, but failed to keep the dominance going in the death overs. Rilee Rossouw in particular was pretty sever on the likes of Soumya Sarkar, Al Amin Hossain, and David Wiese as Khulna Tigers scored a total of tall order.
Overall, the Warriors have done well only when Dawid Malan has scored for them. Malan is currently at the top of the batting charts in the Bangladesh Premier League. The Warriors would need Malan to fire big and if delivers, the Warriors would certainly be in with a chance.
Stiaan van Zyl, Sabbir Rahman, Dawid Malan, Soumya Sarkar, WU Tharanga, Yasir Ali Choudhary, Fardeen Hasan, Abu Hider, Sumon Khan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Ifran Hossain.
While the Tigers are still in a decent position and wouldn't be too worried about qualification for the next round, they were once eyeing the top spot on the ladder. Getting to the top-spot is still a possibility for them, but they are no longer favorites to do so.
They are currently placed at the fourth spot on the table with 14 points to their name and a net run-rate of 0.507. A massive win over Comilla Warriors in their previous match helped them boost their net run-rate, which could come in handy if they are tied on points for the second position.
In their previous match, their batting and bowling both fired all cylinders as they defeated Warriors by a massive margin. As has been in the case in the tournament so far, Rilee Rossouw and Mushfiqur Rahim provided them with a flourishing finish to take them to a towering total. Rossouw was the pick of their batsmen as he returned with the impressive numbers of 71 runs off 36 deliveries.
Their bowlers were even more impressive as they didn't allow the Warriors' power-hitters any space and time at all. Robbie Frylinck ran through their top-order and picked up a five-wicket haul. Mohammad Amir was brilliant as well and he returned with impressive figures of 2 for 18 in his 3.2 overs.
Nazmul Hossain, Mehidy Hasan, Rilee Rossouw, Mushfiqur Rahim, Shamsur Rahman, N Zadran, Robbie Frylinck, Aminul Islam, Mohammad Amir, Shafiul Islam, Shahidul Islam.
This is the last chance for the Warriors to have a say in this tournament. A big win will still keep them in the hunt, hanging only by a thin thread, though. A loss, however, would seal the top-four slots. Also, a win for Tigers would allow them to have a go to claim one of the top-two positions and they'll be striving hard to get that. Considering the stakes and how the two teams have done in the tournament so far and the two teams on paper, the Tigers are better placed to emerge on top in the upcoming match as well.
