CD vs OV Match Prediction - Mar 20, 2023

Tournament: Plunket Shield 2022-23.

Date: March 20, 2023.

Format: Test

Venue: Fitzherbert Park, Palmerston North, New Zealand.

Time: 21:30

We are arriving at the business end of the Plunket Shield competition in New Zealand for the 2022-23 season. Central Districts have already established a claim for the top position in the points tally as they go up against Otago Volts in the town of Palmerston North tomorrow. Central Districts have succeeded in winning 3 out of their last 6 games in the competition. These also have the highest number of victories achieved by any team during the competition. The Otago Volts outfit on the other hand is lying in 5th position with just a single win and 4 losses from 7 games.

The last 3 games played by Otago volts ended in a draw. Three out of their top five batsmen scored fifty in the last match against the Auckland side. Josh Clarkson went on to score a hundred in the game while batting in the number 7 slot. The heroics of Josh Clarkson were principally responsible for pulling out the Central Districts team from the jail. This effort took the Central Districts team to another win in the competition against Canterbury. They will also be hoping for other players such as the skipper Greg Hay, Ben Smith, and Will Young to gather some form in this game. The batting department has been the main worry for Central Districts this season and despite having a powerful batting line-up it has not lived up to the billing.

CD vs OV Team Previews

Central Stags

It is an all-important match for the Central Districts outfit with the race for the top position in the points table getting close to culmination. Other teams participating in the competition that are in the race for the top spot have just a single game left to play. Central districts on the other hand have a couple of matches. The Central Districts team has a good chance of ending up as champions. For achieving this target many batters in the line-up will have to find some sort of form. The Central Districts openers Greg Hay and Ben Smith have not been among runs in recent games.

Schmulian did hit a hundred against Northern Districts in the game before the last one. Tom Bruce also hit a fifty in that game scoring 67 runs when the Central District team got bowled out for 245 runs. Greg Hay will need to lead from the front at this stage of the competition. Other batters such as Dane Cleaver and Will Young will have to develop partnerships with other good batters such as Bruce and Schmulian. Central Districts are going into this match with a good fast-medium pace bowler Doug Bracewell who is also a handy bat in the lower middle order.

The Central Districts' bowling attack went for a lot of runs against the Northern Knights batters. They gave away more than 500 runs in the Northern Districts' first innings. These bowlers will have to bowl well in this game. After that bad outing against Northern Districts, the Central Stags bowlers did a good job in their game against Canterbury by scoring 186 runs. The bowling attack for Central Districts will be led by the likes of Raymond Toole and Brett Randell. Other bowlers that will look to contribute are Ajaz Patel, Clarkson, and Schmulian.

Central Stags Playing 11

Ajaz Patel, Bevan Small, Brett Randell, Brad Schmulian, Curtis Heaphy, Raymond Toole, TA Findlay, Dane Cleaver, Greg Hay, Josh Clarkson, Jack Boyle, Tom Bruce.

Otago Volts

Although the Otago Volts side has managed to win just a single match so far in the competition and that was way back when they played their first game, they have looked like a much better team in recent games. Their batsmen are doing a good job with the bat. Many batters from the top order and middle order are contributing significantly to the team effort. Some lower-order batsmen who are principally bowlers and all-rounders have also contributed to the total. Jacob Duffy and Max Chu are some of them.

The more consistent batters for Otago Volts in the recent games have been Dale Phillips, Glenn Phillips, and Foxcroft. Each of the 3 batters has scored a hundred in the last three games. The Otago Volts skipper Hamish Rutherford will depend on the middle order for delivering crucial partnerships. Rutherford will be expecting a win in this game because the last 3 matches ended in a draw. What they need is a better and more disciplined bowling performance.

Their opposition in this match is not doing too well with the bat in recent times. This is where Otago Volts have to take advantage and hurt the opposition. They have wicket-taking bowlers in the team such as Michael Rae, Michael Rippon, and Jacob Duffy. Duffy was one of the more successful bowlers for Volts in the last few seasons and was leading the bowling charts consistently. He has not been able to make an impact in recent games and has not had much support from the support bowlers. If Otago can get their bowling attack on the right track to get wickets consistently, they will have an upper hand in this encounter.

CD vs OV Toss Prediction

If you look for the records at this venue you will find that few games have been played here. It appears to be a good batting track judging from the few domestic T20 matches played at this venue. Central Districts' batting order is not reliable enough to chase down big totals against an in-from bowling attack. So, they are likely to opt to bat first after winning the toss and back their bowlers to get them ahead in the game. Otago also might want to bat first and score a huge total in their first innings as they ride on the form of their top batters.

Pitch and Conditions

The venue for this game between Central Districts and Otago Volts is Fitzherbert Park stadium in Palmerston North. This is a terrific ground for the batters. The side batting first on this venue will look to score in the excess of 350 runs. This will ensure that they will not trail by too much when the other team goes in to play their first inning.

The weather forecast for the first day of the game is that of some rain. You may get cloud cover after that on the subsequent days. These conditions can help the fast bowlers from both sides as they will be able to get some swing due to the overcast conditions.

CD vs OV Betting Tips

The Otago Volts side has looked competitive in their last few games although they have not managed to win too many games. Their in-form batting order makes it extremely difficult for any opposition to beat them. Central Districts on the other hand looked pretty good in their last match but whether they will manage to dislodge 20 Volts wickets in a game remains to be seen. The Otago Volts' bowling attack is not in the best of form and it appears even less likely that they will succeed in picking up Central District 20 wickets in this game. It is likely to be a close contest in any event with Central Districts being our favorites to win the encounter. Nothing much in it though.
