We are almost a week into the Bangladesh Premier League and after a humdrum start, the tournament is beginning is pick up pace. We saw the totals of over 180 being scored in the first innings and that is remarakble especially after the start this tournament had. Sylhet Thunder, however, are still waiting for their fate to change and will be desperate for a win in their upcoming contest. They are set to lock horns with Chattogram Challengers, who have done reasonably well and are placed in the top-half of the table, on Tuesday, December 17th at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, Dhaka. Although the two teams have had contrasting campaign so far, the importance that each point carries is same for both the sides. It is now-or-never kind of Situation for Sylhet Thunder and a crakcer of a contest is certainly on the cards on Tuesday.
Chattogram Challengers made it to the eliminator in the last edition of the tournament and were eliminated by Dhaka Dynamites. They have started off well in this edition with two wins to their name in a total of three matches. They have four points to their name, but a poor net run-rate has pushed them to the third spot on the ladder despite having equal points as the teams above them.
Chattogram's only loss in the tournament came in their second encounter, wherein they were defeated by Khulna Titans quite comprehensively. Batting first, the Challengers could score a total of only 144, which was chased by the Titans in under 14 overs. The loss significantly hampered their net run-rate and that could become a decisive factor should things go down to the wire for them.
The Challengers bounced back with a superb win over Ranpur Rangers in their next game as they won the match by six wickets. Their bowlers did a fine job of restricting the Rangers to a manageable total of 157 before their batsmen scripted a perfect chase to hunt down the total with ten balls to spare and six wickets in hand.
Chadwick Walton and Imrul Kayes impressed yet again as they returned with the personal scores of 50 and 44 not-out respectively. With the ball, it was the spell of Mahmudullah Riyad and that spell turned the momentum back in their favor. Mahmudullah returned with impressive figures of 1 for 17 in his four overs. Kesrick Williams was the highest wicket taker for them and returned with the figures of 4-0-35-2.
The fact that Challengers have two of top-three scorers in the tournament speaks volumes about the form their batsmen have been in. With the likes of Mahmudullah, Imrul Kayes, Rubel Hossain, and Nasir Hossain available at their disposal, there is no shortage of experience for them and they will be a tough team to get past not just in the upcoming match, but also in all the matches to follow in the competition.
LMP Simmons, CAK Walton, Imrul Kayes, Mahmudullah, Nurul Hasan, Nasum Ahmed, Rubel Hossain, Muktar Ali, Avishka Fernando, KOK Williams, Mehedi Hasan Rana.
Sylhet Thunder finished in the bottom half of the table in the last edition of the tournament and they haven't started off on a happy note this time around as well. They have failed to even challenge their opponents in the three matches they've played so far, let alone winning any of them. As it stands, the Thunder are placed at the seventh spot on the ladder, above only Rangpur Rangers, with zero points and a dismal ney run-rate of -1.979.
In the tournament so far, their batting has been largely inconsistent with their totals reading 162, 91, and 158 against the Challengers, Royals, and Platoons respectively. They were completely outplayed in all three departments of the game by Dhaka Platoons in their last match. Apart from winning the toss, there was hardly anything that went their way.
Bowling first, their bowlers failed to provide the team with early breakthroughs as Platoons got off to a flying start. With a couple of quick wickets from Nayeem Hasan and Ebadat Hossain towards the end of Platoons' innings, they managed to pull the score back a little to 180, which too proved too much to handle for the Thunder.
The chase looked all but comfortable for the Thunder. Rony Talukdar and Andre Fletcher failed to get them off to a much-needed flying start and Johnson Charles followed the pair back to the pavilion soon thereafter. At one moment, the Thunder were toterring at 97 for 6 inside 12 overs and had it not been for Mosaddek Hossain's splendid 60-run knock, Sylhet Thunder would have folded for a lot less. Thunder eventually lost the match by 24 runs.
R Talukdar, ADS Fletcher, J Charles, Mohammad Mithun, Shafiqullah, Mosaddek Hossain, Nayeem Hasan, Delwar Hossain, Krishmar Santokie, Nazmul Islam, Ebadat Hossain.
Check out the Dream11 fantasy team prediction for the 10th match in Bangladesh Premier League 2019 between Chattogram Challengers and Sylhet Thunder
While this match is important for both the teams considering a couple of points are at stake, its importance for Sylhet Thunder cannot be overstated. The Thunder have lost all the three encounters they have featured in in the tournament so far and are desperately waiting to get their first points on the board. Chattogram Challengers, on the other hand, have done pretty well in both the departments of the game and the presence of experienced all-rounders provides their team with immaculate balance. The Challengers have done better in the tournament so far and have a far superiorly balanced side, at least on paper. Therefore, the Challengers go in as firm favorites to win this upcoming fixture and move to the top of the table provided other results go their way as well.
