About the Match
With just 8 points in their kitty, the Daredevils are one step out of the competition being in the last but one position; they will go up against Chennai Super Kings, who are topping the table with 16 points from 12 matches at Raipur on 12th May. Delhi suffered defeat against SRH in the last game, making it very difficult for survival here; CSK on other hand have reclaimed the top spot after a win over Royals in their last match and qualified for the playoffs. It will surely be interesting to see the Daredevils fight it out in the middle on Tuesday to earn redemption.
Chennai Super Kings
CSK won their last match against RR by 12 runs as they posted a competitive total of 157 runs; Brendon McCullum played with a calm head on his shoulder to steer the side to a good total as he blasted a brilliant 88 runs from 61 balls. Faf du Plessis gave him valuable support as they stitched a century stand; on the bowling front, Ravindra Jadeja bowled superbly to register 4-11; Mohit Sharma mixed up his pace well to snare three wickets taking them to a fine victory. The Chepauk fortress was breached by Mumbai Indians in the last game by 6 wickets wherein Pawan Negi scored a fine 36 and MS Dhoni posted 39 to string together a good partnership but it wasn’t enough to register a win. Overall, they are one of the most consistent side in the IPL so far with in-form players like McCullum and Dwayne Smith at the top, providing blazing starts while Faf, Raina, Dhoni and Bravo all have contributed greatly at one point or the another. The bowlers also look in-form with Ashish Nehra, Ravindra Jadeja, Dwayne Bravo and Mohit Sharma capable of taking wickets and restricting their opponents.
Failing to chase down the target of 164, the Daredevils lost their previous match against Sunrisers by 6 runs; Quinton de Kock gave Delhi a rousing start with a sparkling 50 off 31 balls while Kedar Jadhav posted an unbeaten 63 and Saurabh Tiwary scored 26 runs to post a 91-run stand but in the end, they were not able to cross the finish line. Earlier, Zaheer Khan and Coulter-Nile bowled economical spells up front and were rewarded with wickets; even Jayant Yadav, the offspinner, made his presence felt by dismissing the key wicket of Morgan. Previously, Daredevils conceded a 13-run defeat to reigning champions KKR in their away match on wherein Shreyas Iyer scored 40 off 35 while Manoj Tiwary and JP Duminy scored 25 each; however, in the end they failed to reach the target. Overall, there have been noteworthy individual contributions despite the lack of a collective team show. Their strength lies in Shreyas Iyer and JP Duminy who have been consistent throughout and yet again they will rely on the spin duo of Imran Tahir and Amit Mishra to make a game changing impact.
CSK is a well-rounded team with the kind of fielding that can cripple their opponent’s run rate; they are better placed than Daredevils, who are languishing at the bottom of the points table and CSK definitely has more chances to win the upcoming match.
